A couple of excerpts from yesterday’s performance @meetdigitalculturecenter!

THE DRY STONE [NO SOUND OF WATER] is an hybrid project that layers a data sonification of the rivers Po’s drought, an electroacoustic improvisation (featuring @anbredrums on drums and @andreamarinelli_music_visual) and reactive visuals (by @gaab_does_things).

We premiered this performance as a conclusion to “Oltre il Visuale” the first Italian conference about Data Sonification, organized by @pciuccarelli and @onesoundscapeaday)

For the next few weeks I’ll be updating my data sonification portfolio here on Instagram, with a series of short videos about my most significant projects in the field.

This week post is about THE LIST, one of my first encounters with data sonification.

THE LIST is a site specific multichannel sound sculpture that broadcast an algorithmic composition made from the numbers included in @unitedlistofdeath List of Deaths. Lasting around 2 and a half hours, can be arranged in a 4 channel / 8 channel surround system or in a specific configuration for the place that will host it.

It’s first installment has been the main hall of the Bocconi University during MEMI Fest in Milan (11/09/2019 - 14/09/2019), followed by a second one in August 2021 at Palazzo Albrizzi Capello, Venice for BORDERS Art Fair

What better way to celebrate this year’s Drone Day than with a live performance at a deconsecrated abbey? And even better if part of a collective celebration, with more than twenty artists taking turns on stage, with a table of synthesizers, instruments and noise generators, all to bring their own idea of drone music.

I am more than happy to have participated in this event, to have met and re-meet so many fantastic musicians-it was a bit like feeling at home! Thanks to the kind guys at St. Bernardino Electronic Theater and Realtà Acousmatica for having me!

For this live show I thought of a really minimal setup: Audrey II, King Drone and Flamma’s FS03 Delay, with the bitcrusher configuration. Full video up on YT!

Running a monophonic synth sequence through a fully wet reverb is one of the techniques that I love the most for making huge and ever-evolving drones.

Interacting with the filter and the driver parameters on the Donner B1 adds another layer for interacting with the texture.

Playing guitar with an ebow to get that sustained, bowed-string kind of sound, then running it through some huge reverbs. Live looping, adding layers upon layers of guitar sounds.

This cheap casio keyboard makes the perfect ambient sounds. Some of the sounds in there are awfuls, but there are some presets that just sound perfect: slightly analog, warm, and with the just the right timbre.

Will I ever get tired of this drone music setup?

The King Drone and Audrey II are the perfect match, I’m in love with them.

King Drone always gives the perfect foundation for, of course, drones: the Audrey sits in there, unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Premiering this Saturday on Camp Radio at 8PM CEST, in preview from Friday on my Patreon page!

The Asynchronous Drone Orchestra is a remote collaborative project by Chelidon Frame where different electronic musicians are asked to share one (or more) ten minutes sound - be it a drone, a field recording, or a more elaborate soundscape - following a minimal set of rules. All those fragments and noises are then mixed and combined in a long and coherent track, resulting in a choral soundscape where the result is bigger than the sum of its parts.
