In Brissie today, I had a chance to catch Abdul-Rahman Abdullah's exquisite exhibition, Undying, at the Griffith University Art Museum .

These works are predominantly carved, painted wood. This was such a beautiful show. Poignant, bittersweet, heartfelt. Just loved it, see it if you can.

I love Michelle Dawson’s work.
It invites you to linger longer and really remain curious as to the meanings behind the work.

I did a little deep dive into Michelle and her artist statement and here is what I found and took from her words….

‘Michelle Dawson’s work is figuratively based and invariably incorporates animals. She is drawn to the aesthetics and lines of improbable looking creatures such as cheetahs hyenas, dodos, Tasmanian tigers and kangaroos.

She is intrigued by the point whereby the domesticated and civilised meets the wild and instinctual and how these opposing natures interact, inform and/or thwart each other.

Hanging out with my work, The Night Watch at the Wollumbin Art Award opening last night @tweedregionalgallery

And a huge congratulations to Stephen Bird @stephen_bird_artist for his winning work, Alfred. I love this piece so much and am so pleased it got the gong!

It is such a resonant, poignant piece. I've also attached his moving artist statement.

A big thanks to Ingrid and the great team at the Tweed Regional Gallery. It must have been a mammoth effort to hang such a diverse array of works across so many different mediums and make it look so coherent and stunning.

The Wollumbin Art Award is on until 15 November, dont miss it!

Here is an abbreviated video of a class I set last term @byronschoolofart

The exercise behind the Vanitas paintings involved projecting a very out of focus image (3 layers of plastic oil on top of the most out of focus projector setting), of a Jan Van Kessel The Elder, Vanitas Still Life c1665, onto the class wall.

The students' brief was to mix the necessary palette to paint exactly what they could see. Not to anticipate or attempt to guess what they were looking at. Every 20 min or so, over a 5 hour class, the projected image came slightly more into focus. And as it did, the students adjusted their paint palette and paintings accordingly.

This was a great exercise for moving quickly, not bogging down in the details too soon, working over the entire painting, trusting what you can see and allowing the figuration to come. Leaving refinement and detailing until the end.

And also to experience how those initial marks and colours don’t have to be perfect, that the paint will allow for shifting and adjusting the colour and composition almost continually.

The outcomes of this class are currently on show in the Byron School of Art Project Space as part of "Tuesdays", a fascinating look at the breadth of work created over 9 days of painting last term.

There are a few pieces from the archives in:

Two of them contain images of hyenas. I love hyenas...they are much maligned and fascinating creatures.

They are a unique species...not a subset of anything else. In fact they have more in common with cats than dogs.

I love their improbable shapes. With these two works, I've paired them with a couple of Velesquez Infantas...which also have pleasingly improbable shapes!

Hyenas are matriarchal with the leader of the pack passing down to the eldest female pup, who is treated like a princess by the entire pack.

The pairing also speaks to my interest in the relationship between our animal selves and our over-civilised constrained selves.

These are some thoughts that go around in my head and on my canvas.

The last work painted in my Levitators series for:
As Above, So Below, @packgallerystudio
A small group show, with beautiful painters, @cedar_emily_jeffs and @paulabannan

At the last minute, I realised that all my Levitators were vertical, and really wanted a horizontal one...so the paint was very probably still wet when I delivered her.
And a little insight into trying to figure out how a crinoline might fall on a levitating girl!

Nice to hear that one of my Incognito donation artworks has sold today.
Life is a bit hectic, so I only managed two pieces this year....so somewhere out there amongst the 20, 000 plus works, there is another one!
The Incognito Art Show is a non-profit organisation supporting Australian artists.
The profits raised go towards funding programmes for artists living with a disability.
And for those not aware of the event, the identity of the artist behind the work remains anonymous until the work is purchased!
