lots of reflecting this weekend on my own personal independence day as I prepare to roadtrip to the motel where I decided to blow up everything I had known 6 years ago. I ended a horrible relationship. packed my bags. and left LA with no idea what would come next. I didn’t know I’d fall in love with New Orleans. Or roadtrips. Or move in with my parents twice. Or quit my job. Or evacuate a hurricane. Or get 9 tattoos. Or bleach my hair. Or that the friends and coworkers I made in LA would become even bigger parts of my life after I left. All I knew then was that I had to leave. And I leapt. I started making art. I created these characters. And I am seeing them now as my lights along the way. a girl and her dog (soulmates) a few months ago I realized I wanted to stop drawing for a little bit. And for the first time ever this didn’t scare me. I wasn’t afraid I’d “lose” my abilities. I didn’t feel like I had to force or pressure myself to keep going. I wanted to stop so I stopped. I actually wanted to send emails and host status calls and make ads for a little bit - a different kind of creating - but creating nonetheless. while I wasn’t scared to take a rest from the drawing, I am still happy the feeling has returned. or at least is starting to wake up from its little slumber. just in time for my birthday 💚 by @chelletoulouse

easy rider and the trip she inspired all of August I dreamt of driving to upstate New York. I put off making reservations because I didn’t know if I would have the energy to make it all the way there. my mom encouraged me to just START. so I booked a room in Atlanta and decided I could either keep going or come home. I made that decision every morning until I got to the Catskills. I never knew exactly where I was heading. I was exhausted for a lot of the time. I carried cans of chicken and pumpkin for Soleil’s upset tummy moments. I stocked up on bananas at the gas stations so I didn’t have to think about breakfast in the mornings. I stayed in 8 different beds over the course of 11 days. i met kindred spirits and not so kindred spirits. I ate lots of items that included ham and cheese. I realized that driving is kind of like a rollercoaster that you get to steer yourself. i got my first pocket knife. i learned soleil is a little hiker. I wore a variation of the same outfit every day. I wanted to get home and I wanted to keep going. by @chelletoulouse
