My Baka was a ballerina.

And a wife. And a Mom. And a shoemaker. And a dance teacher. And a painter. And the kind of chef who would never be caught dead with a measuring cup.

She only wore fancy, heeled shoes even when it was impractical.
She learned English from watching The Flintstones.
She made the world’s best mashed potatoes.
She swore like a sailor.
She kept nuts in her pocket in case she got hungry.
She was the life of the party and the last one to sit down and eat at every holiday dinner.
She loved anything sparkly, white carnations, theatre, our dogs, and sitting on the patio all summer.

The house they lived in when I was growing up had a big bay window in the living room, and she loved to tell me how we’d stand and watch the rain and the birds, and I’d say ‘fwy birdie, fwy!’. She brought it up for the hundredth time a couple of weeks ago.

She gave me her passion for musicals and dancing.
She gave me her ability to only give enthusiastic hugs (the kind where eventually you’re both rocking back and forth, usually).
She gave me her migraines (less thrilled about that one).

She taught me that love and family and following your heart are the most important things, and that you should always believe there is a little bit of magic in life. I feel like the me that exists without her won’t ever be quite the same- like maybe I lost my soul mate. But I’ll try to put a little bit more sparkle into everything I do for her.
