Orang setempat menyebutnya “api bajalang”.

The world is full of decisions made about indigenous women, without them. ☘️
Decisions about their land. Their health. Their forests. What their future should look like. Made far away, by people who have never sat with them, never heard what they already know.

I grew up watching this happen. In indigenous communities, women carry so much knowledge, about how to heal, how to grow, how to protect what matters but are rarely given a space to say it out loud where it counts. For years, I kept showing up anyway. Through @pomanara.id @padolotoraja , through the communities I work with, through every conversation I had the privilege to meet and share conversation with.

Earlier this year, I joined the ARROW-Akina Mama wa Africa Advocacy Institute (AAI) 2026. Apart from strengthening my capacity, it helped me trust what I already knew - that the stories happening in the communities are part of a much bigger global story, and that they deserve to be heard in policy rooms, not just community halls.

So I wrote my advocacy plan. About indigenous women in Indonesia, their right to healthcare, to safe bodies, to land that has not been taken from them in the name of profit or progress. This process is a part of my journey of becoming. Becoming a part of Global South Young Feminist Fellowship 2026.

To every indigenous woman who shared her story, who are fragile bravely to walk together, who kept going even when no one was watching - this is for you. You are the reason this plan has a heartbeat, and we will be embarking on this journey together.

Thank you @pomanara.id for being my home base. And thank you @arrow_women and @amwaafrika for believing that our voices belong at the table.

Lastly, a respectful shoutout to my fellow indigenous women who have strengthen me in the past years: @apriliskalattu @seriholloallen @halmahera_mangoheka

Tak perlu jauh-jauh.
Buka pintu belakang,
langit turun ke sawah,
dan kampungku pelan-pelan
mengucapkan namaku.

Five semesters.
Some say that’s too long for a master’s degree.
I used to worry about that too.
Now I think it was exactly the time I needed. 🌱

When I started at MPRK UGM, I thought I had a plan. Two semesters of coursework, then research, then done. But life doesn’t follow a syllabus. Halfway through, I paused to welcome my son, Winston, into the world. I spent a semester holding him instead of my notes, and I don’t regret a single day of it. Then I packed up my courage and went back to the field.

Halmahera taught me what textbooks couldn’t. I came in as a newcomer to Tobelo-Galela culture, carrying theories shaped mostly by Western ideas of peacebuilding. I left carrying stories. I sat on porches, shared meals, and listened to people who have lived through conflict and still choose, every single day, to live side by side.

Through their eyes, I saw how fragile peace is, and how deliberately it has to be protected.

I expected my thesis to be about wounds passed from one generation to the next. It became a thesis about hope instead: that the young people of Tobelo-Galela will hold on to the peace their ancestors fought to keep, through Hibualamo, their “big house” where everyone has a place.

If there’s one thing I’ll carry with me, it’s this: peace isn’t the absence of difference. It’s choosing to stay in the same house anyway. 🏠

To anyone whose timeline looks different from everyone else’s: your pace is not a failure. Sometimes the detour is where the real learning happens. 💛

Thank you to my supervisors, examiners, lecturers, and my MPRK family @mprk.ugm , to the people of Duma and Halmahera who opened their homes and hearts to me, and to my son, my biggest reason to keep going. taken in MPRK UGM Yogyakarta by @chelstudy28
