Why Most IGCSE Grade-Boundary Predictions Are Wrong

Can anyone really predict grade boundaries before results day? 🔮

Every exam season, social media fills with “confirmed” boundaries, Reddit polls and predictions based on how difficult the paper felt.

But the official boundaries are set only after the examinations have been taken and marked.

Exam boards consider:

📄 The difficulty of the paper
📊 Actual candidate performance
🎓 The ability of the cohort
🔍 Expert judgement and statistical evidence

This is why last year’s boundary cannot simply be applied to this year’s paper—and why a difficult-paper reaction does not guarantee a dramatically lower boundary.

Predictions can still be useful, but only as a possible range. Never treat one predicted number as your confirmed result.

Save this before results day and share it with someone worrying about unofficial boundaries. 📌

🎓 Your IGCSE and A-level grades could do more than secure a university place — they could help reduce the cost of your entire degree.

Many students assume scholarships are only for perfect students or that they should wait until Year 13 to start looking. In reality, some awards are automatic, some universities offer full or partial tuition support, and certain European routes can reduce tuition dramatically without requiring a traditional scholarship.

🇨🇦 Canada offers automatic entrance awards at many universities.
🇺🇸 The USA offers merit scholarships, financial aid and, in rare cases, full funding.

Is A-Level Biology really that hard? 🧬

Most students struggle for two main reasons:

1️⃣ There seems to be too much content to memorise.
2️⃣ Studying the notes feels completely different from answering exam questions.

The solution is not to keep rereading everything. You need a system that helps you understand the content, identify the words examiners expect and practise using your knowledge.

Try the 4S System:

🔎 SCAN
Read the topic once and understand the big picture. Do not try to memorise everything immediately.

🎯 SPOT
Find the key biological terms. These are the words that help build high-scoring answers.

✍️ SOLVE
Begin with direct questions such as state, list and define. Making mistakes at this stage is completely normal.

📅 SPACE
Return to the topic after a few days, revisit your mistakes and then attempt more challenging explain, analyse and suggest questions.

Repeat this cycle after every lesson:

Learn the content → apply your knowledge → score in exams.

Top students are not successful because of talent alone. They usually have the right mindset, an effective system and consistent guidance.

How many A-Level subjects do you actually need to enter medicine?

Should you take three or four A-Levels if you want to study Medicine? 🩺

Many students assume that four A-Levels will automatically make their application look stronger. In reality, most UK medical-school offers are based on three A-Level grades alongside the correct subject combination, GCSE or IGCSE performance, UCAT results and interview performance.

A fourth subject may be useful when it keeps another university or career route open, but it should not come at the cost of your grades, UCAT preparation or wellbeing. 📚

The key question is not:

“How many A-Levels can I take?”

It is:

“Which subjects best match the requirements of the medical schools on my shortlist?” 🎯

Chemistry and Biology are commonly chosen, while Maths or Physics may help keep more options open. However, requirements differ between universities, Cambridge colleges and application years.

EPQ policies also vary. Some universities may consider it for an alternative offer, while others do not include it in their Medicine offers.

Before choosing your subjects:

✅ Check the official admissions pages
✅ Compare your shortlisted universities
✅ Protect your strongest three grades
✅ Avoid taking a fourth subject only to appear more impressive

Three outstanding grades usually make a stronger application than four stretched grades.

This is exactly what to do when your IGCSE results are released.

📌 Save this decision tree before Cambridge IGCSE Results Day on 18 August 2026—and share it with someone who may need it.

Your result is important, but your next decision matters just as much.

Whether you achieve an A*, receive the grade you hoped for, fall only a few marks short, score much lower than expected or find that your sixth-form or university place is affected, the first step is the same: pause and check the evidence carefully.

Look at your final grade, confirm the correct grade threshold and ask your school for your component marks where available. If something appears unusual, discuss whether a clerical recheck, review of marking or access to your script may be appropriate.

Remember: a review does not guarantee a higher grade. Your mark could rise, remain the same or fall.

A retake may make sense when the grade blocks your next step, the gap is substantial and you have a clear improvement plan. However, think carefully if the grade already meets your requirements or if preparing for a retake could disrupt the beginning of your A-Level studies.

Important Cambridge deadlines:

📅 IGCSE Results Day: 18 August 2026
📅 Enquiries about results: 20 September 2026
📅 November retake-entry deadline for eligible June-series candidates: 21 September 2026

Your school may set earlier internal deadlines, so contact your examinations officer quickly.

Why A-Level Biology Feels So Difficult — And How to Make It Easier
Is A-Level Biology really that difficult? Many students begin the course expecting it to be similar to IGCSE Biology, only to discover two major problems: there is much more content to remember, and answering exam questions feels completely different from studying the notes.

In this video, I explain where students commonly go wrong and introduce the 4S System — a practical study method developed through nearly 16 years of teaching A-Level Biology.

The four steps are:

🔎 Scan the notes to understand the overall idea before trying to memorise everything.

🎯 Spot the essential biological keywords that examiners expect to see in high-scoring answers.

✍️ Solve direct questions immediately, beginning with command words such as state, list and define.

📅 Use spaced repetition to revisit mistakes before progressing to more demanding explain, analyse and suggest questions.

This system helps you learn the content faster, retain information for longer and, most importantly, apply your knowledge accurately in unfamiliar exam situations.

A-Level Biology is not about copying large paragraphs from your notes. Strong answers require precise terminology, careful application and an understanding of exactly what each question is asking.

Students who achieve exceptional results are not necessarily naturally gifted. They usually have the right mindset, an effective system and consistent guidance from the beginning.
