...and so ends my 4 years with the BCCSA. It's been great to serve as a commissioner on such important national work in balancing the public interest and freedom of expression.

Now I look forward to the next chapter...which I hope will include some broadcasting now that I'm allowed to again... Hint hint programme managers.

Ahhh yes, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Liberace's dream. I was just #geocaching and look what I found.

Wonderfully ornate and certainly better in the night time.

On today’s #geocaching adventure, we find ourselves just south of Johannesburg at the James Hall Museum of Transport which was, until I was introduced to the very secret museum to the East by the MX-5 Club, was the most impressive land transport museum I’d seen.

Still, second place is nothing to scoff at. So what makes this the penultimate motor museum to visit?

You learn some great lessons from the past; did you know that fire suits were made from incredibly healthy asbestos? Were you aware that Johannesburg had a mobile library that was actually really cool! What about South Africa’s first electric car - still sporting the Eskom logo? At some point, all these things must die and they tend to come do that here.

I’m pretty sure that was my dad’s Alfa Spyder there too among the car decked out as an orange, double decker buses and, would you believe, bikes that operated with a belt instead of chain; a whole new meaning on slip dif!

The most iconic part for me has to be the plaque commemorating the start/finish point of the Durban/Johannesburg (or DJ) motorcycle races put on by the Rand Motor Cycling Club. If you hadn’t heard of it, that’s okay. The last one was held in 1936 where the record time of 6h5m2s was set. Not bad for a 349cc OHC Excelsior.

2500 items to see later, there’s only one lesson one can leave with; moenie spoeg nie!

On today’s #geocaching adventure, we find ourselves exposed to a new understanding of what a caravan is. In particular, this caravan parked behind a museum in Winterton that holds a tremendous amount of global travel on its clock.

Inventor and engineer, John Weston built this bad boy after a trip to the USA where he was exposed to caravaning. This came about after he returned to South Africa to fight on the side of the Boers but was left poor after the war and had to borrow 100 pounds from a friend.

Weston is actually credited with building the first plane in South Africa though it’s a weak record as the plane never flew. He later set up an aviation company in Brandfort with the hopes of getting Jan Smuts to sign him on as an adviser but Smuts went with Weston’s competition Cecil Compton Paterson who went on to establish the first military pilot training facility in Kimberley in 1913.

After spending WW1 in England working on aircraft, Weston acquired his first motor home and named it Suid Afrika. He rode it all over Europe with his family before bringing it back to South Africa. After some local travels, he attempted an overland trip back to the UK but soon, in Rhodesia, it was accepted that the thing was too bulky for the trek. So he built a new one and spent 15 months trekking across Africa in it; Prairie Schooner

This is now located in the Winterton Musuem and has been altered somewhat in line with the original plan of the Suid Afrika. It was pretty cool and was waterproofed with floating capability for river crossings and everything. It went overland from Cape Aghulus to Bulgaria to the UK.

And here it sits in Winterton to inspire further journeys.
