Allow me to reintroduce myself, my name’s Juproop (but you can call me Jup) and its great to have you here. I’ve been doing ChemEngWeekly across platforms since June 2021, originally as a way for sharing info about how to break into Chemical Engineering at university but now covering all things ChemEng with a twist of entertainment, and I’ve had my fair share of assumptions made about me in that time. As a Chemical Engineering student who graduated from Imperial College London in 2025, some of these have been to do with my degree and others to do with me, so I’m setting the record straight. Yes Prof was biased here, but was what he said wrong? I don’t think so; as a grad I can certainly say that learning more of this during university would have been amazing, the baseline understanding of it really helped me to develop my mindset, so having the chance to go into it deeper would have unlocked a lot more out of the box thinking and creativity! If you’re a chemical engineering student, you can still learn this skill by carving time out to do it or by signing up for extra modules that teach it… else you might also be a grad who regrets not doing it more!

Prof played it safe by saying he wasn’t sure if engineering students realise they need this skill, but honestly I think some probably don’t! It’s a very important workplace skill that this professor has highlighted, and he is spot on that chemical engineering students should learn this skill as early as possible if they can. Will help a lot if you get it right!

The fact that I know SO many students who make this exact “mistake” that this imperial professor is talking about is sort of funny but also sort of worrying at the same time. I did it during my time in chemical engineering, lots of my peers would debate whether it was worth coming to class or studying yourself, and honestly I can truly understand what prof is saying! Whether I agree is another thing though…🫠

Prof might be biased to say that, but what he said about Chemical Engineering is truly spot on! If you look around you, you really can see chemical engineering everywhere which is truly mind blowing, best to not forget it 🧠

This is a great take from Prof! I think knowing this ahead of my first year of Chemical Engineering would have changed the way I approached university and really helped me with making the most out of the opportunities presented in ChemEng and beyond. First years take notes!

Prof is spot on with these suggestions, every chemical engineering student should certainly know how to use excel spreadsheets at the bare minimum, and these softwares are very useful!

This QS2 is law trend has gotten out of hand, I wouldn’t have spoken about this had a bunch of year 12s not approached me the other day when I went to deliver a STEM application ls workshop and asked me if I think QS2 is law. It wasn’t that exact moment per se but the follow up conversations with year 12s and 13s, where some of them divulged they were scared of being “failures” in case they didn’t get into Imperial, and it’s really not like that in reality at all. Your uni’s ranking helps but doesn’t determine your success alone, and social media isn’t real life chat, remember that 🧏‍♂️
