<So Far yet Too Close> took part in <Friction of Distance> at Esplanade Tunnel in Singapore between 13 May – 4 Sep, 2022

Posted @withregram • @supernormal.space

So Far yet Too Close is a collaborative video work between Korean artist Minkyung Choi and Palestinian artist Dina Mimi.

Minkyung and Dina, who met through an online exhibition, share experiences of living abroad and the sense of not completely belonging anywhere.

The artists exchanged a series of performance videos that took place in their family living rooms and studios, playfully engaging with the chroma key technique and household items. Disguised in chroma key costumes, the performers blend themselves or become "holes" in their family backgrounds. Each episode is in response to the video made by the counterpart. Reflecting the artists' physical and cultural distance, the work questions the sense of belonging and alienation, surveillance in daily life, and the (im)possibility of art-making in their respective contexts.

Minkyung Choi @chemimis is a South Korean visual artist, currently based in Seoul. Choi's works explore desire and ambivalence from a female perspective, utilizing video, performance and means of collaboration. Choi screened, exhibited, and took part in artist residencies around the globe including Korea,Japan, Taiwan, and the United States.

Dina Mimi @___sa3lok is a visual artist born in 1994 in Jerusalem, Palestine. Currently living and working in Amsterdam, where she is artist-in-residence at De Ateliers (2020-2022). Her practice is multifaceted and uses video, sound, performance, and text. taken in Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay by @chemimis

We are happy that our project with Yoshiko Shimada <Against Forgetting> is featured in the journal Verge through Namiko Kunimoto’s article
“Becoming a Statue of a Japanese ‘Comfort Woman:’
Contemporary Art, Gender, and Race in the Afterlives of Japanese Imperialism”

Thanks for the insightful article that introduces our work in the context of global feminism and militarism.

Many of us have turned our attention to the political and societal upheaval in South Korea, especially while massive protests continue in Seoul.

GYOPO’s final program of the year takes a look at the conditions of women living in South Korea and Singapore, with a critical analysis of the K-beauty industry and discussion on aging, Disability and urban space.

Join Korean Seoul-based artist Minkyung Choi and Singaporean artist Weng San Sit in discussion with Elise Hu, author of FLAWLESS for a screening followed by presentations and a discussion on Saturday 12/14.

At 1pm, we will host an optional screening of“A Manual for Timeless Youth (영원한 젊음을 위한 매뉴얼),” 2024, 50 min., which has been exhibited extensively in Korea. This is a special opportunity to experience “Timeless Youth,” a collaborative project by Minkyung Choi and Weng San Sit that investigates our individual & collective aspirations for “youth” and newness. It attempts to understand the ways in which the phenomena is echoed in all aspects of our lives; from identities to our bodies to urban spaces, and in social, cultural, scientific and virtual spheres. Focusing on the Korean and Singaporean societies, ”Timeless Youth” explores this pursuit for youth and modernity and its often contentious relationship with our history and memory.

At 2pm, Minkyung Choi, Weng San Sit, and Elise Hu will present on their work and engage in a conversation.

Hu’s FLAWLESS is a journalistic exploration of the present and future of beauty through the lens of South Korea’s booming “K-beauty” industry and the culture it promotes. Elise Hu is host of TED Talks Daily and co-host of Forever 35, and host-at-large for NPR.

When to BIFAN, the biggest VR festival in Korea. While making my first VR piece, I keep returning to one question: “Why VR?” <Clouds are 2000 Meters Up> felt like a beautifully crafted blockbuster that pushed how far cinematic storytelling can expand within VR. The essence of VR is experiential — it has to be something you perceive with your body, not just something you watch or understand. by @chemimis

(English follows)

<Sak-da: The Poetics of Decomposition> Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul

Saw a genuinely great exhibition after a long time. One that reminded me what museums are actually for.
The content was strong, but what really stood out was the curation — each work given room to breathe and shine. It engaged all the senses, raised real questions about the role of contemporary art, and practiced barrier-free access in the truest sense. The wall texts were impressively written: clear and readable without dumbing anything down, and the thoughtfulness extended to visitors with visual and hearing impairments.
For a while now I’ve been frustrated watching Korean contemporary art institutions chase trends, go bigger and flashier, or force themselves to be “accessible” in ways that feel condescending. This exhibition felt different — like it had found a genuine public through the spirit of democracy, not performance. by @chemimis

260407-260409 NewImages Festival, XR development market x Arts Korea Lab booth
I learned so much from my first participation at the XR development market with great support from Arts Korea Lab. I feel like I am a different person from who I was three days ago.

260407-260410 New Images Festival at Paris

I am participating in the XR development market with my new project <Passage Room>.

Passage Room is a room scale single player VR experience that explores a woman’s journey of becoming a desiring subject, while questioning the norms of romance & sexuality. You enter a girl’s room, interact with objects, and they start to speak about body, sexuality, relationships, and the contradictions of being a woman.

It is my first time to participate in the New Image Festival. I feel grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many people and learn from them. + having so much fun in the XR paradise!

Thank you so much @arts_korea_lab and @newimages.festival for such amazing opportunity. by @chemimis
