my former student turned little brother. 💜
from the classroom to the world.

so proud of eli—who was literally flown back from his deployment, where he’s commanding an entire unit in egypt, just to stand in this moment and receive one of the university of alabama’s most prestigious honors: 18 under 31. writing his nomination was easy. watching him become this man has been the real gift.

and somehow the night got even fuller—because i finally got to meet the beautiful woman who birthed him, along with his stunning sister, in the flesh. family has a way of finding you in ways you never expect. and why were we (his mom, sis, and me) in ALL BLACK WITH NO COORDINATION WHATSOEVER?! the soul knows.

love, pride, legacy, and a whole lot of gratitude in one room.
forever cheering you on, little brother. ✨ taken in Bryant-Denny Stadium, University Of Alabama by @chenoia

friday was such a beautiful, juicy and abundant delight. to have the opportunity to meet and speak with @honeiee and also tell her how deeply impactful her work has been in my own ATRS journey (which also started in 2017 in cuba, where she has deep roots) and in my work as a professor where in a class about the black woman body, a section of the syllabus centered her work as another space of reclamation of our history, our bodies, our space, our worship, our reverence, our divinity. and to hear her speak about her work and read from it … i was left in awe. because we often imagine revolution in many ways, but this work is not only revolutionary. it is radical reclamation of a history that the western canon has fought so viciously to suppress and erase. she centers us as gods and goddesses and allows our history to begin there. something @erykahbadu tried to tell us long ago … “…if we were made in his image then call us by OUR names. most intellects do not believe in god, but they fear us just the same.” their fear has historically equaled our erasure, and HARMONIA ROSALES AIN’T HAVIN’ IT 💜

also, the book won’t be released until october 14th, so please, please, please pre-order. i did feel a little like one of god’s favs though in having mine september 26th AND SIGNED lol. but if nothing but to support the radical and beautiful work that harmonia is doing, BUY BUY BUY!!!

(i know the video of her reading, which was so powerful, is cut off a bit, so i will be posting that as a separate reel.)

had such a blast at the CONJURE HAUNTED ATTRACTION PRESS NIGHT! i have no pictures here that do the night justice beyond me being reunited with my long time luv bruv! i’ve been to a MANY haunted attractions, and none compare in detail … the vintage medical equipment, embalming tables, coffins, 19th century hearses, the complete inability to differentiate actors from props, or the visual effects that give you the appearance of wading through swamp water … and yes, there are gators. i ran out full speed ahead, lost my glasses, had debris in my hair, was sweating … I WAS TOOOOTHUUUUU!!! Muuva Mambo did her big one this time … but let’s be honest, she always does 💜 taken in Conjure Haunted Attraction by @chenoia
