The better we understand each other’s weaknesses, the better we learn to love.

Spirituality is not about religion or God — it is about conscience.

Gandhiji lived his life with non-violence, truth, and tolerance. This is the kind of atmosphere your school should encourage. Times have changed — today, what truly matters is science and spirituality.

Spirituality will eventually rise above all religions. Roman Catholics and Protestants are fighting in Ireland; Shias and Sunnis continue to battle elsewhere. Hundreds have been killed in these conflicts. That is why I speak of spirituality rather than religion.

A human being must learn to accept others as equals. All ideas that create divisions and differences among people must be set aside. In the end, the only thing that remains with a person is spirituality.

Only when we rise above caste, religion, gender inequality, economic barriers, political parties, national borders, and so on — only then will we truly be united.
Spiritually, we are all the same.

Whether someone is a wealthy, well-educated person, or an uneducated poor person — if they hear that someone has sacrificed for the welfare of the poor, they feel joy. If they hear that one human has killed another, they feel repulsion. That is conscience.

Whether civilized or uncivilized, even if they express it differently, the feelings within them are the same. This human conscience is what we call “spirituality.”

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

"In the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love. In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile. In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm. I realized, through it all, that in the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there's something stronger-something better, pushing right back."

Just as we think the mysteries of life are unveiled, it sheds one mask only to cloak itself in another, deepening the enigma.

Even though a human being has the freedom to live however they wish, I still do not understand what stops an individual—who is capable of independent thinking—from shaping themselves with personal values and taking steps toward living a meaningful life.

When it comes to living based on personal values, most people seem to have neither enough understanding, nor liking, nor attachment, nor even the minimum awareness of such values. This is evident in how they join crowds, shouting slogans like herd animals.

“Individuality” is not an easily attainable refuge. To reach it, a person must cultivate themselves greatly. But a crowd, a herd—these are easy shelters to obtain. Within them, we can hide our lack of individuality. Lacking a backbone, we can point to the crowd, caste, religion, or party as our spine and escape responsibility.

When I proudly declare, “I am of this caste, this religion, this group, this party,” I never have to talk about who that solitary “I” really is. I do not have to grow as a unique, independent thinker. In fact, I do not even have to feel (not even a drop of) the need for knowledge. By speaking divisively, fostering religious hatred, chanting “Long live the leader,” boasting about ancestral caste pride, I can live my entire life without ever knowing the meaning of living by personal values or recognizing that even as an individual I possess uniqueness. And then I can die like that. Is that what we call “life”?!

“Be The light unto yourself,” says the Buddha. Why then does a man not even wish, for a single moment, to be his own guide?

What is permanent? Pleasure is certainly not permanent; but neither is sorrow. The flood of joy inevitably ends in the ocean of sorrow. In fact, joy is born only out of pain and struggle. So to speak, pleasure is uncertain.
Illness, old age, and death—these are certain.
Pleasure is brief; sorrow is abundant.
Why this imbalance?
Why does pleasure perish so quickly?
Why does sorrow linger?
Why does sorrow always appear at the end of pleasure,
like deep darkness at the close of twilight?

Ku. Pa. Rajagopalan (1902–1944) was a significant early 20th-century Tamil short story writer known for his introspective, philosophical narratives and for exploring the emotional and existential depths of ordinary life. His stories often delve into the contrast between surface happiness and inner turmoil, reflecting on themes such as suffering, impermanence, and the human condition. One of his well-known stories is "Irulilirunthu" (From the Darkness), where he offers profound reflections on the nature of pleasure and pain.
