Thank you to my very organised wholesale customers who have already preordered their wreath bases, star wands, giant hearts etc ready for their Christmas orders, retail stock and workshops.
When you are a one man band business that hand makes everything, it helps enormously to be able to plan ahead and prepare for what is the busiest time of the year.
August is when I ramp up wreath base production as I have a couple of thousand to make before the beginning of November😱😆

Can I just explain … what wholesale means?

I sell my handmade British grown willow wreath bases on both a wholesale and retail basis.

Retail sales are to customers buying any quantity from 1 or more items for their own use - not for business purposes where the use or sale of that item will result in profit - so a general customer.

Wholesale sales are to business customers only who will use the product in the pursuit of their business - for me that is businesses in the floral and horticultural trades. Wholesale orders have a minimum quantity attached to them. This allows costs to be covered and the prices to be more competitive.
I’ve had numerous enquiries over the past few weeks from small businesses that want to buy a low number of items but at a wholesale price, seemingly feeling that because they are a business they should only pay a low price regardless of order quantity.
So I just wanted to clarify the situation. 😊

I’m making these willow star wands ready for @ainsworthvillageday . They’ll be sold to support my son’s fundraising efforts for @teenage_cancer . He’s running 100k today (yes that’s nearly 3 consecutive marathons) so if you live in the Bury / Bolton area you might see him on his epic run @danieldwilliamson 🏃‍♂️

Lots and lots of willow ends when working on a basket. Once snipped off or 'cleaned' the work is complete and the basket ready for use.

A spacious shopper off the bench yesterday. A tall, oval design with an irregular open weave - perfect for your daily shopping essentials or full of goodies and a blanket ready for a picnic 😊

I’m not neglecting my wreath base making duties. The stockpile is growing steadily ready for my lovely florist orders in time for the Christmas season 🎄

When I made this tall asymmetric style willow basket I could envision it full of flowers. I just had to bring that vision to life!

A British grown British made basket filled with seasonal British flowers ❤️

This basket would be ideal for wedding florals in place of the ubiquitous milk churn and as it has a handle it would be easy to move from ceremony to reception.

A lovely little shopper with warm chocolatey autumnal tones. Ideal for popping to the shops or whatever else you can think of.
The shape reminds me of a floor tom (drummer in the family) so I call this shape my drum basket 🥁 😊

A couple of years ago we had a cocktail bar at our Christmas party at home. I made a chalk board with cocktail menus on it (see today’s stories) so I thought I’d use the back of that to create a sign for markets and events.
It was a nice job for the cool of an early morning .

Weaving outside today as a) it’s a nice day and b) I’ve made a big mess in my workshop and there’s barely a spare inch of space to weave in! 😁
When I’m working outside I give my weaving a spritz every so often just to keep the willow moist and workable.
If I’m working with buff I do this when working inside as well.
My spray bottle contains water and a few drops of pure essential oil - in this case is rose geranium 😊 The essential oils keep my working space smelling lovely but also have beneficial effects for both the willow, my environment and me.

It was cool enough to get stuff done in the workshop yesterday so I got two baskets finished.
I finished the handle on this one with a 4 strand plait.
Start with the 4 strands side by side then bring the right hand rod over 1 and the left hand rod over 2 as shown.
The plait was then wrapped around the handle and the ends woven away.

I’ll be bringing this basket (and others) to the @fabulousplaces pop up summer market in a few weeks time 😊

A fresh pile of willow into tank number two.
I have two of these 8 foot tanks which work well for the quantities I need. I also occasionally use soaking bags (available from my website 😉) - particularly for buff and white willow, or when the tank water is frozen.
Willow floats so I use whatever is at hand to keep it submerged. I use old scaffold board off cuts wedged under the tank bars and a plastic crate with a brick in to keep the particularly buoyant butt ends submerged.

You can find these tanks on second hand sites quite easily but they are often not much cheaper than buying new! I bought both of mine from @mcveigh_parker_est1979 .
