It's been a heavy few months — ramping up for time attack while working through some hard decisions about the business.

The truth is the last three years have seen a steady decline in people buying their parts from us. Some of that is competition: big online superstores with the financial muscle to hold deep stock on the shelf. Some of it is just where Australia — and the world — is at right now. When money's tight, modifying your car is one of the first things to go.

So we've had to make decisions we didn't want to make.
Last week was the last week for Tom, our apprentice, and Ben, our logistics and product manager. Their roles were made redundant. It wasn't a reflection on either of them — the work to support those roles wasn't there, and that's on the business, not on them.

Most of you know Ben. If you've ordered from us, he's the reason your parts turned up, and the bloke on the other end of the email when they didn't. Tom's a good kid who loves this stuff, and I hope he lands somewhere he can keep at it. We wish them both well.

That leaves us a team of four, covering workshop, tuning, ordering, shipping, product management and customer service between us.

Practically: we won't always get to the phone. We'll try, but we won't always manage it. There'll be delays on shipping and on getting back to people. We'd ask for some patience while we work out what the new normal looks like.

To everyone who's bought from us, trusted us with their car, or just stuck around — thank you. I didn't start Cherry Tuning to get rich, and just about everything it's earned has gone back into research, development and product. I still think that was the right way to run it. It's just a harder way to run it than the alternative.

Same products, same knowledge, same people doing the tuning. If you've got a build waiting on parts, or a car that's been due for a tune since last summer, now's a good time to get in touch — we've got the capacity, and we'd rather be busy.

We're not going anywhere. And we're not done making Hyundais and Kias as fast as possible. by @cherrytuningperformance

EOI: Fully-Modified i30N Premium DCT - $47,990

So now that DCT development is essentially at a point where we don't need a dedicated DCT at Cherry anymore - so it's time to move this car on to a more deserving home, and so that we can focus on the next big project...
Maybe it's time we started sorting out our race car so we can represent ourselves next year at World Time Attack!

If you're in the market for an already completed project car, this is the one you need... However, if we don't get interest in the car as-is, we will revert it to stock and sell it through more "normal" pathways

Hi all,

More i20N / Smartstream updates!

We hit a roadblock when trying to get custom code running on a facelift i20N - We only have one tool that allows for full ASW (code) writing, and it doesn't support the facelift i20N ECU... So what were we going to do!?

Over the last 2 weeks, Tristan spent the best part of 100 hours decompiling ECU software trying to find the best way to bypass the security that was stopping access to the ECU, and after many, many failed attempts and bricked ECUs - he did it!

So, another world first - we have successfully been able to write fully customised code into the Facelift i20N ECU, enabling our new boost control model to run - unlocking not only the full potential of the factory turbocharger, but opening up the limit on anyone running a larger turbo on their car! On top of that, custom coding has the potential to unlock other functions like map switching, rolling anti-lag, and flex fuel (once we can figure out the hardware limitations that currently stop the i20N from being able to run ethanol - we tried E30 and even that was too much for the fuel system)

We are working on re-listing our hybrid ball-bearing turbo for the i20N now that we can fully control it with the factory ECU - so keep an eye on the website for that!

🍒 A WORLD FIRST FOR THE i20N 🍒

"Just turn the boost tables up." If only. The i20N ECU tapers boost off up top no matter what the maps say — its air-mass model claws it back (that ~13 psi-at-redline wall). You can't tune it out; you have to change the code.

We cracked that limiter once. Then Tristan went deeper — four days of reverse engineering and custom coding — and built a world first: a fully custom closed-loop boost controller, injected straight into the factory ECU.

Introducing the CHERRY CUSTOM BOOST MODEL.

🎯 Reads real boost, actively holds your target — flat, smooth, repeatable
🎛️ A custom boost curve for every drive mode, from the factory dial
🛡️ Dual-sensor overboost protection built in
📈 Where the factory taper quits (~11–13 psi by redline), ours holds 3–4 psi more from 5k to redline — ~5% more power up top, and that's the stock turbo limiting it now, not the ECU

Others have claimed ECU patches — broken limiters, bent sensors, messy results. This is the real thing, done right.

Dyno-only (needs specialist tools — no remote). New tune with the Boost Model $1,990, or add to an existing Cherry tune $990. Workshops — DM us about licensing.

Turbo is done already just waiting for injectors then tune. It’s had a fresh run through with @martiniracingproducts fluids for the DCT and engine plus their SuperKool for the cooling system.

Can’t wait to see how this thing goes on the dyno and more importantly the track

Massive news for the i20N and Smartstream 1.6 crowd across the world!

Over the years we have mentioned limitations with the i20N (and other Smartstream 1.6T) ECU that was presenting as a mass air limit or something similar. This has become a well known frustration and limitation for tuners around the world, with some tuners seemingly developing patches or solutions, however nothing ultimately seemed to fully overcome these limitations.

After many, many late hours and long days of decompiling the ROM (operating system) in the ECU, we have come to realise that the limitation seems to be more heavily linked to turbo model structures which are essentially forcing the car to maintain a total air mass limit. This meant that while peak boost in the low/mid-RPM could be set relatively high, even with an upgraded turbocharger (like our G25 hybrid), the ECU would essentially start to taper in a boost limiter, leaving us with around 13psi at redline.

Over the years we've developed several workaround solutions, even to the point of "bending" sensor values to give more headroom, and while that worked to a point, we've ultimately never been happy with the outcomes and it goes against our general tuning ethos where we want the most accurate and clean tune possible.

After months of research and late nights, and with some guidance from Tristan, ultimately Byron - our beautiful tuning wizard - has finally cracked it!

With a relatively simple code patch, we are able to bypass the limiters, allowing us to extract maximum boost from the ECU, with no tricking or bending required.

This means i20Ns can now hold full boost throughout the entire rev range, and we've been able to hold 25 psi all the way to 7,000RPM with no cuts or limitations whatsoever!

Obviously this is a massive development, and while it's currently best suited for cars with upgraded turbos, ultimately this change will benefit all Smartstream 1.6T owners, no matter the build or tune level.

As Tristan says "Good Enough isn't Good Enough" - so we will keep working on this and refining it over time, but we're excited to roll this out ASAP.
