It’s been 10 weeks since my fall and 9 weeks since my surgery, so figured it was time for bit of an update on my broken leg. I’d hoped the surgeon would give me the green light to start weight bearing activities when I saw him last week. But though the breaks are “progressively healing,” the “non-weight bearing” restriction remains. That means I’m still at the rehab hospital hopping on one leg with my walker or rolling around in my wheelchair. I see the surgeon again Nov 9th. Hopefully then, my restrictions are lifted and I can start trying to walk. BUT in the meantime, I can remove my leg brace most of the time & work on trying to start bending my knee to increase the range of motion. That’s pretty tough & painful, but I can now get in & out of the car 😁! That meant a drive by our house to checkout the dahlias Claudia has been taking care of. It also means more outings in general - like dinner out & a drive to Brantford for Thanksgiving with my family which was great (no one took photos though😳). I did finally get to meet & hold my great niece & stop by to have another visit with my dad before heading back to Toronto. Really hoping to get out of here & home by late November, but who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️? The nurses, therapists & doctors are wonderful here. That helps make a difficult situation better than it might be. Never imagined I’d be laid up & in hospital for so long. How quickly life can change! But I’ve learned to take one day at a time, do my physio & appreciate the simple/normal things I used to take for granted. And to be thankful for all the friends & family who visit & check in to see how I’m doing. 💕 #healing #rehabilition #hardwork #hopefully #positiveattitude by @cherylfull16

Today marks 3 years since we lost our dear friend. Biggles was known to many for her @BlueJays fandom. But Liz also had a heart of gold, a generous soul, an absolutely wicked sense of humour & an affinity for vodka & cranberry in a tall glass😉. We miss her every day. #BringerOfKindness #BlueJays #friend #friendship #baseball by @cherylfull16

Healing well so I got the OK from the doctors to get out of the rehab hospital for the afternoon to go see a game. Not my usual view, but I’ll take it. Met up with friends before first pitch. Baseball, popcorn and a 2 - 0 lead after the first inning. Vladdy even hit a double in his first at bat 😳!! #baseball #BlueJays #feelinggood #lifeisgood #LetsGoBlueJays by @cherylfull16

REHAB UPDATE:
Thirty-four days since I fell and ended up with a tibia plateau fracture of my left leg, 27 days since the surgery to install 2 plates & 16 screws. Day 20 at Toronto Grace rehab centre and the progress is steady, but slow. I can hop on one leg with my walker about 75 yards (with 3 rest stops along the way), I’m now free to roll around the facility (including to the patio on the roof) on my own, and to get out in the neighbourhood if I’m with others to keep an eye on me! That means the odd roll over to a variety of restaurants/cafes in the area. Claudia and I even went to a movie - I highly recommend “Tony” if you’re an Anthony Bourdain fan! I was getting HANGRY for a steak, so we ordered in from The Keg after watching a Blue Jays game on the weekend. I’ve been blessed with lots of visits/phone calls/FaceTimes with great friends and family to keep me busy and break the monotony! The doctor has given the OK for me to go see the Blue Jays play on Saturday (wheelchair seating of course) and today I graduated to “Independent Toileting” meaning I can actually head to the washroom all by myself without supervision! 😁😁. Injury update! I’ve completed my first week in the rehabilitation centre (my new home) and though I won’t be able to put any weight on my left leg for a long time, I’m learning how to hop on one leg with my walker and get around a bit. Saw the surgeon Monday who was pleased with how both plates and screws are sitting and how things are healing. They removed the sutchers and 72 staples and the incisions are healing well. I see the surgeon in 6 weeks. In the mean time, I’ll keep on keepin’ on! Thanks to everyone for the visits, phone calls and messages!
It looks like my days as a leg model may however, be behind me 😜! by @cherylfull16

I’ve been out of commission/absent for a bit so thought I’d explain why.

Back in the spring, a slip on some ice left me with a torn meniscus & a a sprained MCL in my right knee. After lots of rest, therapy and a cortisone shot in late June, I was starting to get to the point by mid July that I could get around without my cane and start to rebuild the strength in my knee.

But on Aug. 6th as I was walking down some steps, it gave out. I put my left leg out to try to brace my fall. It didn’t work so well😜.

I ended up hyperextending my left knee and my femur (thigh bone) smashed into the two lower leg bones resulting in damaged ligaments & meniscus, a broken fibia and more significantly, a tibia plateau fracture (google it if you want 😫).

I spent 12 days at Mt. Sini in Toronto (shout out to orthopedic the team there), and after a 4.5 hour operation to install 2 plates and 15 screws, I finally got discharged to the Toronto Grace rehab program on Wednesday - my home for at least the next 6 weeks by the sound of it.

Things are going ok here. Small setting. I’m learning how to hop on my former bad leg (now my good leg 😉) using a walker. I can hop about 25’ (with a couple of rest stops), get to the washroom (14 days of bedpans was more than enough thanks) and had a shower yesterday! No physio team here on the weekend, but I have a self-directed program that also provides some therapy/exercises for my other knee which is of course, more painful now that it is being so heavily relied upon. The past couple of days I was able to get up to the rooftop garden, which is amazing. Fresh air never felt so good!

I see the surgeon at the fracture clinic tomorrow morning, so I’ll be asking about crutches and next steps. The pain is manageable-finally.

Poor Claudia is doing everything at home, tending to our dahlias, plus bringing me things I need and checking in here everyday of course. Thanks to my sisters, family and friends for keeping tabs on me. Of course the Blue Jays decided to play their best/most entertaining baseball of the season when I am unable to be at the games.😱

Learning how to accept assistance has been very challenging & humbling. Be careful out there! by @cherylfull16

Part two of posts from our trip to San Diego/Petco Park. @luishurtado24 was breaking in the All-Star game glove he wore when he caught at the Home Run Derby. Saw lots of @bluejays media while there: @mlb.keegan, @ben.nicholsonsmith, @maddiship (who was the 1st female to broadcast a Sportsnet game that night), @alykhankr and Alex Andreopolos, who is doing double duty as bullpen catcher and heading up security for the team in the road. Our amazing seats afforded us the opportunity to see first-hand how quickly those IPads come out in the dugout. A quick trip to La Jolla was well worth it. Beautiful views and lots of sea lions enjoying the beach. Definitely a city and a park I’d like to return to in the future. by @cherylfull16

We finally made it to Petco Park in San Diego as we inch closer to realizing our retirement goal of seeing the Blue Jays play in all 30 MLB stadiums. We’re up to 22 and counting. Petco was every bit as impressive as we’d heard and I think it’s now my favourite ballpark of those we’ve visited. Wonderful in all respects. It didn’t hurt that we were treated to on-field batting practice before the game where we had the chance to watch the guys hitting and working on drills, as well as many of them stopping by for selfies; autographs and conversations. As if that weren’t enough, we went to the seats we’d been sent and found we were sitting adjacent to the Blue Jays dugout, so we not only had a great view of the game on the field, but of all the goings on inside the dugout! Kevin Gausman wandered over in the 7th inning and said - “you guys must be hot,” as he handed us a couple of bottles of water. What a great guy! To top it off we won the game that night and got our hopes up about a series sweep! 🧹
That was not to be, but we had a great night at the park Friday. The Stadium Chase continues…… by @cherylfull16

Last minute trip to Tampa to check off another MLB ballpark and catch a series at Tropicana Field. As often seems to be the case, the Jays struggled at the ‘Trop of Horrors’ and lost a game they had chances to win. DEX Club seats made for great views and neat cocktails. Jose Bautista was good enough to take a photo and sign a baseball for us before the game. Great to see @luishurtado24 & @tito.lebron pregame as well! Hoping the guys can get a win tomorrow with Gausman on the mound. They’ll need to swing the bats and score more runs though. #BlueJays #Toronto #Baseball #baseballroadtrip #chasing30 by @cherylfull16

Hard to say for sure how much snow we got today, but pretty sure it is at least 2 feet. Multiple trips out to shovel, but it was pretty much impossible to keep up with it the way it was coming down. I’m sure it was the most snow in such a short period of time in the 20+ years I’ve been living in Toronto.
