One year gone but you’re still here. When I’m on an adventure, hear Frank Sinatra, or take a chance. Love you to infinity, dad. by @chesfernandez

Thank you Gloria for all that you did, the attention paid, the love that radiated from your existence. You were the real fucking deal. You did what you could, listened more than spoke, and radically dreamed big for everyone.

Thank you for my first long term contract out of grad school and believing in me. You were always the first to remind people you were just one woman, part of something much larger, something that they could be a part of, too. You always made room at the table and I learned so much from being in your presence. We will keep the fire burning. by @chesfernandez

Olympic Hopefuls is a sharp, funny and unexpectedly moving new play about four Filipina women of a certain age who decide, against all logic and gravity, to qualify for the Winter Olympics in curling. Armed with grit, group chat loyalty and a suspicious amount of delusion, they train on borrowed ice while wrestling with identity, ambition and the quiet ache of being underestimated. As Olympic fever rises, so do long-buried rivalries and impossible dreams. Part underdog sports saga, part diaspora comedy, Olympic Hopefuls asks: who gets to chase glory, and who’s told to sit in the stands?

Dear @waichinghohknyc -

I was waiting for you to return my text about seeing Ragtime. I thought, “She’s probably asleep, that responsible b*tch.” I knew you’d text back because you always did. I could always count on your friendship. The last text from you in the Bald Sisters group chat was last week: “Miss ya!!!”

A glowing smile, a deep conversation with your hands in my hands our ears turned towards each other’s voices, a box of Portuguese egg tarts for Sunday rehearsals. You brought exuberance, joy, and ceaseless dedication to your craft everywhere you went, any room that had the honor of witnessing all your many gifts.

We were rescheduling our date because you had booked another gig and we were looking for other days to be together and maybe have dinner with @vichetchum, too. Always booked and blessed, and if not booked about to be, going from adventure to next adventure fully present and game.

Thank you for being the first living example for me that a long, abundant, playful life as an actor (and a mother, wife, friend to all) is possible. Thank you for always being ready to eat some delicious food in good company. Thank you for always texting back. It is an honor to have been in your orbit.

Some video filmed @steppenwolfthtr that we ended up not using for the show because ultimately @jescajane wanted Wai on stage. I keep watching them though. Photos from @liachangphotography @kyleflubacker @joel_m @renavision by @chesfernandez
