When Pages Breathe: Public Domain InSight, In Mind

On May 6, 2026, Princeton University Library Special Collections will present a lecture-performance and visual art experience that animates and reimagines archival Public Domain texts within the space that preserves them.

Co-curated by Special Collections Librarian Dr. Jennifer Garcon and Chesney Snow, Lecturer in Theater and Music Theater at the Lewis Center for the Arts, with acclaimed visual artist A.K. Lovelace, a veteran Black comics illustrator and arts educator whose professional credits include work with Marvel comics, this installment of When Pages Breathe invites audiences into a rare, immersive encounter to interact with selections of the Public Domains archival project, led by Garcon and Emma Sarconi.

Snow and Lovelace explore worlds shaped by racial passing, colorism, Black artistic expression, and the tension between surveillance and freedom. In conversation with Dr. Garcon, these texts are reframed not as static artifacts, but as living documents that continue to inform our contemporary understandings of race, identity, and our collective human experience. taken in Princeton, New Jersey by @chesneysnow

Many wrote about this new Women of Hip Hop course at @princeton and many had a lot to say without knowing much about it.

So I brought the professors to the show.

Shouts to @therealeternia and @artefactsbyfrancesca for joining me to break it all down, and shouts to the longtime homie @chesneysnow for bringing this important course to life.

We always say we want more from "the culture" so when we're given it, it deserves proper treatment and our full attention. Peep the whole interview.

🎤 New Course Announcement! | Spring 2026 📚

We’re excited to introduce Miss-Education: The Women of Hip-Hop — a multimedia course, lab, and performance workshop at Princeton University that centers the history of women in Hip Hop — not as a footnote, but as foundational.

Through a gendered lens, we’ll trace the development of Hip Hop culture, examine the range of women’s experiences within it, and explore the emergence and evolution of Hip Hop feminisms.

From MC Sha Rock, Roxanne Shanté, Queen Latifah, Sister Souljah, Lauryn Hill, Bahamadia, Lil Kim, Cardi B and beyond, this methods-based course will examine the lives and professional careers of women in Hip Hop by simultaneously focussing on how we preserve these histories. Students will learn to research, archive, and document women’s contributions to Hip Hop using practices rooted in Hip Hop archiving, oral history, performance, and podcasting. With guest speakers appearing throughout, the course will culminate in original creative and scholarly work showing at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts.

📍 No prerequisites — ALL creative thinkers welcome!
📅 Thursdays, 1:30–4:20 pm
🎓 Instructors: Chesney Snow (@chesneysnow), Eternia (@therealeternia), and Dr. Francesca D’Amico-Cuthbert (@artefactsbyfrancesca)
