New solo album Maydena Creek is out today. It’s been a long journey, from initial sketches to something very special (for me). Link to digital and vinyl releases in bio.

I never end up making music that fits any particular genre, including those I personally really enjoy listening to – it seems as though I work on the periphery, in some nameless genre.

Each ‘song’ on this record came together as though I was painting pictures. Different strokes and images added and collaged until forms emerged – which, on a solo project, you can spend time doing. The source materials are a bunch of disparate sounds and novel instruments that shouldn’t really be together, but for me that was where the fun lay. The album’s classic ’70s title was from the file name of a creek recording I used on the record that I had made a while ago. The album is about nothing, but in my world, it’s somehow about everything.

Many thanks to Program Records, and Chapter Music, and the support of special folk at both labels, and to Sonia for putting up with my endless studio time....... There will be a special launch performance at Eastmint on November 28 - tickets via Humanitix by @chesworth.d

Hypnotic minimalism, experimental songs and shimmering dream-folk spanning five decades of Melbourne’s musical underground.

Celebrating the launch of David Chesworth’s hypnotic and strangely beautiful solo record Maydena Creek — his first solo release in many years.

Renowned for his 80s groups Essendon Airport, Whadya Want? and Drive Time with Bill McDonald, as well as his composition, video and sound-art works of the last four decades, Chesworth returns with an album released on vinyl by the wonderful team at Program Records and digitally by Chapter Music.

Hinting at natural flows and geological vibrations, Maydena Creek combines these with modern distortions and surreal imagery to form a compelling, hallucinatory collection of off-kilter but strangely catchy experimental songs.
In typical Chesworth style, the music brings together the quirky 1970s Fun Machine organ and the more egg-headed Moog Subharmonicon, which draws on forgotten early-20th-century electronic instruments.

Alongside David Chesworth will be a rare performance of the seminal 1976 work Minimalism by Melbourne experimental group → ↑ →, performed by musicians Mia Alexander, Arsam Samadi, Kassie Junkeer and Clementine Girard-Foley, with direction by Philip Brophy.
Plus, shimmering atmospheric anthems and alternative minimalism from lo-fi/dream-folk specialists Who Cares.

Our heartfelt thanks to Hidden Door Journal and Ranch Pressing for inviting us to extend our Unseen Light séance tape project into the realms of live performance.

It was great to channel out some of what we’ve absorbed from listening to every word on 23 actuality séance tapes, recorded in Auckland and Australia between 1958 and 1972.

A magnetisation is taking place right through us.
If we listen the portal stays open.
We need to re-dedicate our atoms.
Artuna calls to us.
There are warnings.
Arthur Conan Doyle is working for us on the other side.

With thanks to Hidden Door Journal editors Lewis Gittus @lewiscancut, Sarah Jones, Joel Stern @sternjoel, and Sarah Walker. Presented at @thesubstation with tape archaeology from Philip and Jesse @multisonics.

Oral Histories - David Chesworth

We sat down with David Chesworth, one of this country’s most interesting and eclectic composers. David’s work has been instrumental in shaping Australia’s experimental and electronic music landscape from the vibrant days of the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre to decades of pioneering sound and video art.

Watch the full oral history interview between David and MESS co-founder Robin Fox via the link in our bio!

Vale John Crawford...... I first met John as a fellow composition student at the new Latrobe University Music Course in 1976. Then he became a regular attendee at the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre, where he performed his own work on several occasions.

John went on to become an influential broadcaster, initially at 3CR in Melbourne, where in the late 70s, he presented the New and Experimental Music program with Warren Burt and John Campbell (a project celebrated in 2016 by Liquid Architecture https://www.liquidarchitecture.org.au/program/new-and-experimental-music. ....Originally titled Amputations, the program was closely connected with the bourgeoning experimental music scene in Melbourne at the time.

John joined the ABC in 1981 as a music producer (moving to Adelaide and later to Sydney then Canberra), where he actively pushed for the inclusion of new and experimental music at a time when ABC was developing Classic FM and increasingly promoting an easy-listening playlist of classical hits. With the assistance of others along the way, including Graeme Hinckley, Julian Day and Stephen Adams, he produced and presented New Music Australia from 1990 to 2001.

He went on to become manager of ABC Classic FM from 2001 to 2008, and subsequently ABC’s Live Music Director, before retiring in 2014. From 2016, John then worked with the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville.

John played an important role from the sometimes tricky position of working from within a big media institution - the ABC - while supporting and promoting experimental and generally ‘outsider’ music to wider Australian audiences. Travel well, John.

We were lucky to present David Chesworth’s hands-on reimagining of 50 Synthesizer Greats across 2 intimate sessions at High Note earlier this month. A beautiful space to sit with this wonderfully strange work as David layered new sounds in real time. Thanks to FUSE + @darebincouncil for helping dial ticket prices back to 2006.

Maydena Creek is the new solo album for Australian post-punk iconoclast David Chesworth @chesworth.d , renowned for his 80s groups Essendon Airport @the_hangar_1979, Whadya Want? and David Chesworth & Bill McDonald, plus his composition and sound-art works of the last four decades. The album is released on vinyl by @programrecords and digitally by Chapter Music on 16 October 2026, and is available for pre-order now. Today we share gently disorientating first single Sun Keeps Shining, featuring David’s first new vocal recording since 1988.
The album is named after a creek that runs beneath a Tasmanian rainforest, a recording of which appears briefly on the album. Subterranean geological vibrations combine on Maydena Creek with modern distortions and surreal imagery to form a compelling and hallucinatory work.
With a career now spanning more than 40 years, David is renowned for many things, but probably best known for his pioneering minimal synth explorations on 1979 album 50 Synthesizer Greats, and his hypnotic and beguiling work alongside guitarist Robert Goodge in Essendon Airport, who have been active on and off since 1978. by @chesworth.d

Hyped to be hosting two performances of David Chesworth’s 50 Synthesizer Greats at High Note next Thursday as part of Darebin Council’s FUSE Festival. In addition to this pioneering work, David’s catalogue is one of the great rabbit holes of Australian experimental electronics, with much of it faithfully preserved by Chapter Music.
