“As we get close to the nearest point to the moon, and the furthest point from the earth, as we continue to unlock the mysteries of the cosmos, I would like to remind you of the most important mysteries there on earth, and that’s love. Christ said in response to what was the greatest command that it was to love God with all that you are. And he also, being a great teacher, said, the second is equal to it, and that is to love your neighbor as yourself. So as we prepare to go out of radio communication, we’re still going to feel your love from earth. And to all of you down there on earth and around earth, we love you from the moon..”

Last week I was invited to join BYU-Idaho Geology on a trip to southern Utah where I’m doing field work for my master’s.

Special thanks to Forest for recreating such an epic scene with us, to Scott for choosing carbonates over clastics, and to Bill for giving us the opportunity to make fun of clastics. #cancelclastics #carbonates4life

I was truly thrilled to have these three great professors, geologists, and friends from two different institutions with me in my field area.

I’m grateful for the many opportunities BYU-Idaho and BYU Geology programs have given me.

It’s a ghost trilobite!!! 😱
This trilobite got mostly baked - much like I’m sure many of you did at some recent Halloween parties - only it got baked through partial metamorphism.
The shale the trilobite originally died in got steam cooked by groundwater that was heated by a nearby igneous granite intrusion. Normally, fossils can’t withstand the heat from these processes and become dissolved. Luckily for this trilobite, it didn’t get too baked because the outline of its body still remains.
Happy Halloween! Don’t get baked! 🎃

Saw some beautiful iridescent clouds this afternoon! I’ve never seen any this pronounced and big.

Iridescent clouds are not very common. They form when there are thin clouds made of small ice crystals high in the atmosphere that scatter the sun’s light. ☁️☀️🌈 by @cheyenne.lake

A few highlights from our CA trip.

Though it was very last minute and there was little to no planning involved, we still managed to see some awesome places and did not get kicked out of any last minute camping sites.

… and we did get a new car.

Also, spare yourself 5 hours of misery and don’t drive from Tonopah to Ely, NV. by @cheyenne.lake

Haven’t gotten pictures of all our rocks acquired from the Tucson Rock and Gem Show, but I had to show this bad boy off first. This is a chondritic meteorite that formed about 4.5 billion years ago when the solar system was first forming. See those spherical crystals? Those are spherical because they formed in ZERO G!! 🤯There are also shiny chunks of iron and nickel. All the elements contained in this meteorite are the literal building blocks for terrestrial planets. And I get to hold it in my hands!!!! 🤩

Jani Radebaugh also got a meteorite from the show - check out her meteorite post too! @radjanirad

Happy Halloween! 🎃

Ben and I got our Halloween thrill in yesterday. Not from any haunted house or corn maze. Rather, we took on the real deal by going through a spooky slot canyon. It was more of an adventure than we bargained for.

We did not expect to go through any cess pools… nor did we expect to still be in the canyon an hour before sundown, challenged with the task of still finding a way out. And I was wet... It turns out that it’s a good idea to test how deep the water is in several areas of a cess pool with your hiking pole before taking the plunge in the deeper side. Ben came out dry for that reason and didn’t end up wet and smelling like a moldy cow pat.

We found a safe way out of the canyon before dark, but we ended up on the opposite side of the canyon than the trailhead… 😐 So we hiked in the dark above the canyon for about a mile until we came across some God sent kerns, which lead us safely back into the canyon and across back to the road. We did not have to cross the sketchy, wooden, 100 year old sheep crossing bridge across the slot canyon.
