I was reading The Beauty of Everyday Things by Soetsu Yanagi when I chanced upon this chawan for matcha whisking in @matchaculture.sg ‘s catalogue.

Yanagi says “The world of beauty and the world of utility are not separate realms.”, which was something I could conceptualise but I didn’t have a hand crafted item that fit that description. Take for example, beautiful Chinese vases that are purely for contemplative display. They are indeed artful, but my appreciation can’t go deeper than “it’s just beautiful” (Me problem, I’m learning how to love things without assigning usefulness to them). I knew I wanted to take care of this chawan the second I laid eyes on it. The stamps, the colour, the shape… I imagine the previous owner whisked matcha happily while admiring the beauty of the vessel. I have yet to whisk a bad matcha in this bowl.

Iron-Brown Chawan with Moss-Green Ash Glaze

Hand-impressed circular motifs create a rhythmic band that catches the glaze differently across each stamp.
The round body and characteristic flared rim give the bowl a distinct silhouette. The interior reveals concentric throwing marks beneath a muted green glaze. by @cheyennekmy

I know that life is ephemeral and unpredictable, which is why Game Night was so emotional for me. The flawed human experience is so real. We know these people, we know their problems because we faced them ourselves.

But unlike my Maya, expressing love to my friends and family comes easily. I love you all, and what a blessing it is that we exist at the same time to enjoy each other’s company.

(Don’t @/ me for my facebook ahh collage it’s effective)
