Welcome to my New York apartment.

I bought it in 2019 for $749,000. The apartment is in a central location in the West Village. It’s a duplex apartment that spans across two floors.

I renovated the entire apartment for $167,000. Everything that you see in this video was designed, including the moldings, kitchen, and even the marble Mantle.

I wanted to create a sophisticated, feminine, and warm environment inspired by European charm. I used to live in Paris for four years and love the architectural details of Haussmannian buildings. So I added all of the moldings you see in the apartment as well as an 1800s Victorian Mantle and antique mirror. I love to mix in contemporary pieces with antiques to create my own style.

this Renovation sparked my love for home, decor and small spaces. I’m so excited to do this again on an even smaller apartment in Paris. Follow along to see how I designed that space!

How do you think I will design this apartment?

I found my dream apartment in Paris and it was nothing like I expected to get. As many of you know, I was looking for a top floor apartment, likely a “chambre de bonne” with a balcony or terrace. I was not looking for a place with beams because I actually don’t like them in most apartments. I was hoping to find a very classic Haussmanian style building. None of this was true about this apartment.

But from the moment I saw it in the listing, I knew it had such great potential. It feels like the French countryside and the beautiful magnolia tree outside in the courtyard adds such a great view. The beams are quite beautiful and I think I like these because they are thinner and more lightweight feeling than other apartments with traditional thicker beams. It is a two flight walk up, but definitely manageable as the floors are not that high up. This is the top floor in the building so there’s no one else above me.

Follow along for the entire purchasing and renovation process. We have signed the promise de vente and will be going into closing very soon. I will eventually share the cost of the apartment and all the details about fees for closing but going to wait to do that after it’s locked and done so I don’t jinx it. lol

Bienvenue ! I’m Michelle and welcome to Chez Vu 🤍

“Vu” is my mother’s maiden name, and a tribute to the side of my family I hold closest. In French, chez vous means “your home,” and that’s exactly what this space is about, sharing my home and life with you.

I began Chez Vu in 2023 to chronicle the renovation of my 700 square foot duplex in the West Village. I may not DIY (I buy!), but I’m always on the hunt for quality pieces and trusted craftsmen to bring elevated living to small spaces. I believe luxury isn’t about size, it’s about intention, beauty, and celebrating even the tiniest moments in our day.

I work in marketing and branding as my full time job but content creation has been an incredible creative outlet. I’m currently renovating my pied-à-terre in Paris, and I look forward to sharing that journey with you.

Thank you for being here 🤍

My last trip to Paris was all about finding the pieces that will make my Paris apartment feel like home. Here’s where I shopped:

📍 @boliacom for Scandi-meets-Parisian sofas and soft sculptural shapes
📍 @nv.gallery for affordable furniture
📍 @kave for easy, warm pieces that don’t take themselves too seriously
📍 @hmhome for the little finishing touches
📍 @lamaisonpierrefrey because a Parisian apartment isn’t complete without beautiful wallpaper
📍@matelas_epeda I got the Gatsby mattress because I love a firmer bed

Some pieces made the cut, some are still on my wish list. Which shop would you hit first? 👇

Save this for your next trip to Paris ✨

Moving to Paris is a dream. Finding an apartment there? Less so. 🇫🇷

French landlords expect a full dossier (paystubs, tax returns, a work contract), a garant, and income of roughly three times the rent. Add the classic catch-22 of needing an address to open a bank account and a bank account to get an address, and it’s no wonder so many newcomers get stuck.

Start with @bluegroundhomes , you can book a fully furnished apartment online before you even arrive, starting at one month. Wi-Fi and utilities are included, support is a message away in their app, and you get the one thing every transplant needs most: time. Time to walk the arrondissements, get your paperwork in order, and figure out where you actually want to live.

Which neighborhood would you start in? Tell me below.

Monthly cost revealed in the video!

@atom.living specializes in micro luxury apartments in Paris that are 15 m² which is around 160 ft.² or less in size. They have mastered the art of optimizing a tiny space with all the amenities that you can think of including a washer, refrigerator, cooktop, and storage for your clothes and even suitcases.

I love how they used a wall of mirrors to really open up the space and reflect the light coming in from the balcony. The view of classic Parisian rooftops in the 17th arrondissement is such a great way to start and end your day.

It’s a great solution for short term stays, those waiting on visas, students, or bail mobilité. New comers to Paris know how difficult it is to navigate French bureaucracy.

Could you stay here while visiting Paris?

Paris Reno : Part IV

Wallpaper and floor reveal!

I have been keeping a secret from you guys for this entire Renovation. One of the very first things I decided on for this project was the @lamaisonpierrefrey wallpaper. Au bord du lac has been living rent free in my mind for at least a year. This was even before I purchased my Paris apartment. I wanted to either use it in my New York apartment or if it fit the design of my Paris apartment it was going in. Thankfully, it feels like it was always meant to be in this place.

The flooring was a big controversy for some as I was pulling out the original floors from the 1800s. I’m not going to rehash why they needed to come out but l am so happy about the floors that I had chosen. I have zero regrets. They are from@ @carresol_editions and they are perfect!

Next time im back in Paris this place will be done! Crazy to think it’s already at this point.

Follow along for the next videos where I take you along for furniture shopping.

Paris Reno check in : Part III

Let’s check in on the bathroom! It’s the smallest space in the apartment but the one I went the boldest on for design.

I’m so excited to see the materials and shape starting to take place. The mix of Levanto Rosso and Calcutta viola are going to be stunning. Along with the @gessi_official fixtures.

One more update to go with the floor reveal and mural!

What other details do you want to know about ?

Renovation Check in : Part II

so much a part of a renovation is problem-solving. Due to constraints around electrical panel and phone placement we had to create a new location which turned into an even better design moment.

Would you have built out the coffee nook or kept more storage?
