A quick summary of part of our amazing journey across 7 islands (Rhodes, Simi, Paros, Antiparos, Naxos, Kefalonia, Ithaki, aka Ithaca) 10 flights, 8 ferry crossings and 1000's of kilometres driven in 3 cars. From the most amazingly breathtaking scenery, gorgeous beaches, stunning fir and pine forests, delicious food (of course), some the most beautifully kind and engaging people I have ever met. Some of the roads we drove on were precipitous to say the least that tested our resolve to keep going when at times a truck met us headlong or 3-4 point turns were required to take hair-pin bends, no guardrails and 200m drops with some roads having cracks and washouts. It was hairy!! But very much worth it! From Byzantine architecture and Churches, ruins dating back to about 2000 BCE, it was a historical adventure well worth every ounce of effort❣️
... more to come on the family discovery also! xo 😘 taken in Paros Island, Greece by @chezzleyama

Well, we have been having such a wonderful time, I am behind in my posting! 😔

Paros to Naxos: Two Days of Hills, History, and Hellenic Chaos

Day 9 – 11 April: Paros’ Whitewashed Charm
first stop was Lefkes, the island’s original capital - a maze of whitewashed lanes, splashes of blue and green on doors and shutters, and views that tumble down the hillsides. From there, we wandered into Parikia, another hillside village with all the Cycladic charm you’d expect - though many buildings bore the scars of Greece’s financial crisis. The contrast between beauty and hardship was striking. Lunch on the foreshore at Greca was simple and perfect: open gyros and crisp fried calamari. Explored Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a Byzantine church dating back to 326 CE. Legend says its mythic “hundredth door” - only 99 have ever been found, and the final one is said to appear when Hagia Sophia becomes Orthodox again. Day 10 – 12 April: The Day of Terrifying Roads If Day 9 was serene, Day 10 was… vertical. We somehow found ourselves driving up to 765 metres on roads that felt almost straight up. Narrow, winding, and absolutely not designed for rental cars. It was our second accidental venture onto roads that should come with a warning sign. A memorable day, to say the least. Day 11 – 13 April: Naxos for a Night. We caught the ferry to Naxos the next morning - surprisingly smooth despite the usual Greek-island bustle. Our stay at Ippokampos was lovely, and we spent the day exploring by car once again. The highlight was the Temple of Apollo, where only the monumental gate remains, standing proudly against the sky. Even in ruins, the grandeur is unmistakable. Wildflowers carpeted the island in every direction - no wonder no one bothers mowing. Dinner at Scirocco was delicious, as always, and we ended the day with a sunset that washed the whole horizon in gold. by @chezzleyama

Days 7-8 have been quieter - from packing to leave Rhodes and travelling to Paros.

We visited the ancient city of Kamiros on southern Rhodes where it has been excavated from the side of a mountain. The rest of the city is yet to be exposed - we were told the city actually extends from the top of the mountain to the sea, so they have a long way to go to expose the rest - fascinating!

Had our last Hoorah at Semis Family Taverna, attended the local church for Good Friday blessings and acknowledgment. Said our sad goodbyes and look forward to seeing Lea and her fiancee during their honeymoon in Brissy next year!

Travelled to Paros today, picked up the hire car, checked into our very traditional new digs, did our grocery shopping at the local supermarket and relaxed in readiness for a very late night of traditional Easter celebrations. by @chezzleyama
