Last week I braved the Gong show at the Comedy Store in London, a brutal event known to "strike fear even in the hearts of veteran comedians." 3 judges from the audience get red cards. If they don't like you they raise it. 3 cards and you're out. Comics have been known to get 3 cards just for saying "I'm from Scotland" On my show, a guy swallowed hard before his first word and all 3 cards shot up. The goal is to last 5 minutes. The prize? A spot on the professional lineup.

The first time I did it 8 years ago, I couldn't even get to my first punchline. I forced myself to do it again despite the PTSD because it was my only way of possibly getting into this legendary club as a comic. This time round, even as a regular at the best clubs in NYC, it was still a wild ass ride.

I started off well and got to my third joke, which had a set up disguised as a punchline. I hit the pseudo-punchline, and bam, TWO red cards went up.

The audience cried out in protest as though to stop the third judge from raising the card. They created such a ruckus I paused mid-set. "KEEP GOING!!" they screamed. Third judge held his card at bay, so I made a hand gesture to the audience of "ok settle down" and continued the rest of my joke. When I finally got to the real punchline, the audience erupted in applause, as if to say to the judges "you see??? we were RIGHT!"

I decided to make a last minute change to my set, incorporating an audience member the host had spoken to, and the audience went NUTS at the unexpected call back. I got to my closer, and the music "Hallelujah!" was played - I had hit the 5 min mark!

However there was still more to overcome! The contestants who survived 5 mins did a joke off, and the winner was chosen by a clap-off. In the end, I lost to the young comic pictured next to me. Sigh, how disappointing.

But 2 days later, there was a plot twist! As I'm sitting on the plane heading back to NYC, I received an email from the Comedy Store: an invitation to do a spot on their pro show!!

WOW!!! Truly one of those rare instances where you can lose the battle but still win the war (like my pal @usamastandsup demonstrated on a much larger scale in Funny AF 🤣) by @chiacomedy
