On April 15th this year, I left the studio feeling defeated. The piece on the left had looked better a few days earlier, and I hated how it had turned out. As for the one on the right—I was convinced I’d ruined it completely.Then I spent six months away for various projects, and it’s only now, after some distance, that I’ve had a chance to reflect on the process. Looking back, I realize I actually like those paintings. Maybe they were heading in a great direction for me. “Chiao-Han Chueh's practice consistently revolves around the intersections of the body, emotion, and power. Over time, her work has gradually shifted from narrating emotional experiences to exploring the immediacy of embodied existence. Nunu Fine Art is delighted to announce the acquisition of Chiao-Han Chueh's “She-wolf” by the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Hamburg-based Taiwanese artist Chiao-Han Chueh (b. 1989) reflects on her experience of growing up in Taiwan and later living in the West as an Asian woman, contesting the normative gender constraints of women’s bodies and sexuality by portraying primarily nude female figures engaging in unbridled behavior within fantastical spaces. Her approach to oil painting has been shaped by canonical Western traditions and Chinese calligraphy and ink painting, which she learned at art school in Taiwan. Her work demonstrates the convergence of her personal experience and aesthetics, influenced by diverse artistic traditions. Nunu Fine Art is proud to have presented Chueh’s first solo exhibition in the United States, “Intimate Play,” in 2023 at the New York gallery. Chueh’s “She-wolf” was also featured in the 2024 group exhibition at Nunu Fine Art New York, “IN THE MOMENT: Six Artists from Taiwan.” A selection of Chueh’s works is currently on view at Nunu Fine Art New York’s Project Space. In May, I underwent an unexpected but necessary surgery — and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. 甲狀腺癌🥵To the incredible medical team in Taiwan — bravo.I love you all for giving me another chance to be well.The operation went smoothly. Now we continue — with further treatments,and with learning how to live in a body permanently changed.To my great surprise, I realized how deeply I am not ready to leave. It would be unbearably painful to go without finishing my exploration in art.My longing for life is inseparable from my longing to create.Another quiet awareness: I am deeply loved.I was tenderly cared for by people I’ve known my whole life.I’ve come to see that time continues between us — no matter the distance.This experience glued together all the years I drifted between Taiwan and Germany.This is the month I turned 36.it’s still insanely beautiful. ❤️ by @chiaohan_studio
