"degenerated" - september 2024

photography has always been about capturing the world around us. what bothers me about generated photographs is that they are devoid of that.

sure, they've been trained on real images, but they simply breaking photographs down to their simplest parts and reassembling them into something that feels familiar to us. then again, what is any art if not a crude combination of that which came before it.

still, i find myself holding on to the ideological beauty in capturing the human experience. whether that is out of dedication or pretence is yet to be determined. i never go into editing a photo knowing what i want it to look like. i always just fuck around, and stop editing when i see something i like.

given my disdain for all things generated, i found myself quite perplexed when i realised that this edit that i liked so much looks more generated that anything you can generate now, despite being entirely human made.

i guess we're getting to a point where AI doesn't need to copy humans. humans have gotten so used to what AI feeds us, that we are beginning to like it more than what we can make.

we are no longer the imitated, we are now the imitators.

what’s that saying about life and art? by @chiasmaya

"passing glimpse"

part of me remains suspended in doubt over these hyper-edited shots. i ask myself if i push the photos too far past their breaking point, so far beyond what i saw that i'm just making up a reality of my own.

then, i realise, that's the goal. sometimes i see things that make me feel things i cannot explain. the editing that happens after the fact is an attempt to chase and rediscover that emotion.

two lines from frost's "passing glimpse" have been haunting me this past week, "was something brushed across my mind, that no one on earth will ever find".

of course, you too can any day walk to westerpark, look down this canal, and see this sunset. i just don't know if you will the way i did that day.

the whole point of me doing this, is hoping that i can make you feel what i did. i still don’t know what it is exactly i felt.

do you? taken in WESTERPARK by @chiasmaya
