Day 6: Admire

A tiny bee pauses to admire a beautiful glowing flower carried by an adventurous little mouse. This interactive card uses an AND switch, requiring both connections to complete the circuit and illuminate the bloom.

Day 6: Admire

Today I am celebrating one of the greatest friends of all time with a light show and round of applause. I used #chibitronics Rainbow Fade Animating LEDs for special effect.

I learned how to create the clapping mechanism from Square Type’s YouTube video, “Clapping Hands With Recoil Action.”

I was invited again this year to take part in @chibitronics Light-Up Pop-UpTober! My word for October 4th is “Lonely” (only two days late this year!)
.
I wanted to choose a word that was more of an idea than a physical object, since that seemed like a harder design challenge. I thought about loneliness for a while, and how it can come as much from feeling isolated as from being alone
.
I thought about people being “ahead of their time,” which is such a weird phrase, and how lonely it must be to see something no one else can see
.
Then I thought about Galileo, up at night in the cold January air of 1610, the first person to ever see the moons of Jupiter. Did he feel alone in that moment? Did he tell a friend? A lover? Or keep it to himself for a while?
.
And then I wondered about Jupiter itself. Assumed to be alone since humans first started looking up and naming the planets. It suddenly became clear it is the center of one of the liveliest neighborhoods in our solar system. Did Galileo, seeing that, suddenly feel a little less alone? Or even more alone, seeing that even Jupiter had company that night?
.
Each year, Chibitronics invites paper engineers from around the world to make a light-up pop-up card using their paper circuit technology. Each artist picks a day from @am_popup’s original Pop-UpTober design challenge
.

Day 3 of Popuptober with a cat going on an adventure for today’s prompt word, #explore .

In the daylight, the orange cat is surrounded by the colorful abstract blobs, but in the dark, they are on a treasure hunt through the jungle.

What makes the reveal work is the red LED light, which cuts out the yellow and magenta ink and makes the cyan ink show up dark. The circuit I created for it is super simple and is a piece I can take on and off. The battery pops through a hole I cut in the card and holds the light in place. When the card is open and the bottom is flat, the flap in the conductive tape makes contact and completes the circuit to illuminate the scene.

The first of many possible “contraptions” that I’d like to add to a mini pop-up light-up chain reaction that I’ve been working on for @chibitronics #Popuptober2026!

For day two of the#LightUpPopUpTober challenge, I got inspired by a little rolling origami shape posted by @paper_craft_ideas_ to make a little tumbling switch for my LED lights. It works about 34.5% of the time.

Would be great to explore more foldable, popable, mechanical elements that could switch lights on and off and trigger paper circuit creations. Looking forward to more explorations of this mashup #tinkering activity.
