July 25th never meant anything to me until 11 years ago. Until it became the day that I held my dad’s hand and watched him take his horrible last breath, something I wouldn’t wish upon my greatest enemy.Now this day haunts me. I can feel it creeping up. No matter how much I try to avoid it, the reminders are always there. The memories pop up on my calendar, and they bring me back to my final few weeks and days with him.As much as I joke and laugh and say I have the worst memory, I can recall every last moment and every conversation we had. I can tell you where I was, what I was wearing, all of it.I remember the last day he ate pasta and drank wine. I have pictures of it. I remember the sleepless nights trying to think of ways to save my dad’s life.I remember buying a birthday card for my mom because, in a month, it was going to be her birthday. I tried to get him to write her a card, and I held his hand as I held back the tears and tried to help him. He told me to make sure I got her red roses for her birthday, and I promised I would.He made all of us promise that we would carry on the annual CNE family tradition and not skip a year. He made us promise that we would go that year, even if it meant going without him.I tried to get him to fight more, saying, “But Papa, you can’t go. You gotta bring Samantha to her first day of kindergarten, and the baby is coming in three months. You gotta be here to see the baby.”I tried everything to keep him here with us just a little longer. And he wanted to stay. You have no idea how much he wanted to stay. But it was hard. He fought so hard his whole life for our family, and I knew that unless I told him one thing, he wouldn’t let go.So I said it.And I lied to my dad.I told him that it was okay to let go, that we would be okay, and that I would be okay.I’m not okay.I haven’t been the same person since losing my dad, and the truth is, I never will be.This is the last picture I ever took with my dad. Some traditions are worth holding onto. ❤️Every year, we take this same photo on this same bench at sunset at @fernresort.Every year they get a little taller.A little older.A little more independent.And every year I’m reminded just how quickly time moves.That’s what makes Fern so special. For 131 years, it’s been family-owned, passed down from generation to generation. When you’re working on a project and decide to use AI to throw some text on images quickly, and instead it gives you this.A picture that is totally out of left field and has nothing to do with what you asked, haha! This is how the convo went when it generated this image for me…ME: Hahaha wtf is this? We were working on adding a text overlay.AI: HAHA okay fair 😭 That completely went off the rails. It randomly turned your project into a Pearl Jam mom command center.Pure jokes 🙈. Funny, yet also scary that it knew to incorporate @pearljam, @arcticmonkeys, podcasting, and supporting local. I was talking to a friend the other day about how so many people feel the need to look a certain way and how hard it can be to show up as your true, authentic self, especially online. Truthfully, I struggle with it sometimes too. It’s one of the reasons why, for years now, I’ve shared these good morning pics on my stories before I even step foot out of bed, brush my teeth, do my hair or put makeup on. It’s my way of showing up as my real self. Raw, unfiltered and exactly as I am the moment I wake up. A little reminder that none of us need to be perfect.
