Big news - Ross has officially joined Chicago Common! With his deep experience in architecture and focus on real estate development, we’re excited to expand our work with developers who value thoughtful, intentional design.

We’ll continue offering interior design services, led by Jill, who has been running the studio for the past three years. Together, we’re building something that goes beyond a traditional architecture or interiors firm. A collaborative design consultancy that supports projects from concept to execution.

Supporting how a family cooks, gathers, and spends time together each day.

Milled Modern prioritized improved flow, increased storage, and a warm, inviting environment built from high-quality natural materials.

The design balances clarity and restraint with professional-level performance, creating a kitchen that feels intentional, composed, and deeply practical.

Best of luck to Midwest Finalist @chicagocommon at the upcoming Winners’ Summit and Gala this month! by @chicagocommon

Come for the poke. Stay for the space.

At Mammoth Poke, we created an earthy, easygoing interior built around warm materials, natural tones, and tactile finishes. Our focus was a space that feels welcoming and suited for a quick lunch or an unhurried catch-up.

Nothing says “stay a while” quite like a large fireplace to gather around.

This hearth anchors the open shelving, concealed storage, and built-in reading nook in one generous space to settle in.

A townhome remodel centered around a warm, restrained material palette and a more cohesive connection between the kitchen and living spaces.

In the kitchen, a dramatic stone backsplash brings texture and character to the space, balanced by simple cabinetry and understated finishes. The living room carries the same quiet, considered approach, creating a comfortable backdrop for everyday living.

A bathroom can feel timeless without feeling predictable.

The key is often in the smaller decisions: how a mosaic border meets the field tile, where color begins and ends, and how much contrast the room can hold. Here, a soft blue perimeter gives the floor definition while keeping the overall palette calm and connected to the home’s character.

The bar is where the everyone gathers.

At JOMON, the coffered wood ceiling creates a subtle frame over the sushi counter, pulling attention toward the ritual of preparation, conversation, and service.

How do you bring a historic building forward without losing what makes it special?

Our work at this multi-unit building on Humboldt Boulevard is rooted in that question. In partnership with Grace Street Innovation Lab, we’re preserving the architectural charm already present in the building while making the thoughtful updates it needs to serve residents well today.

The details are already there. We’re simply giving them the care, attention, and support they need for the next chapter. taken in Humboldt Park, Chicago by @chicagocommon

This space was designed around the idea of a true third place: somewhere outside of home and work where people can linger, talk, and become part of the neighborhood’s daily rhythm.

Thoughtful millwork can make a small home feel surprisingly generous. Making the most of the home’s smaller footprint, while creating space for both function and collecting.

A former walk-in closet became a compact office, with deep drawers below and open shelving above for books and collected objects. In the dining room, custom plant shelves turn an existing window into a layered display. And in the kitchen, custom cabinetry gives the kitchen a tailored feel brings the same attention to detail to the heart of the home.

Sometimes the most meaningful work of a renovation is quiet: removing what doesn’t belong, restoring proportion, and letting an older home feel like itself again. This Craftsman residence had been softened by an early-2000s update that obscured much of its original character.

The approach was less about creating a new identity and more about drawing out the home’s full potential.
