PSA: don’t bike on leaves unless you have to. Wet leaves can be very very slippery.
That said, sometimes you just want to slow down and hear the crunch of dry leaves. 🍂 🍁

The obituary we almost wrote:

On Saturday Oct 11th 2026 at 6:20 pm, a family of four nearly died in a well lit crosswalk on Lincoln Ave in Lincolnwood, IL.

(The video shown is darker and in a different intersection to illustrate what I was wearing when this happened).

We were biking with hi-vis and lights in the last of the daylight after a fun day of kid’s soccer with the @thechicagostars.
The speeding SUV driver had ample room to stop. Her phone was in her hand. After nearly running us all over she didn’t apologize but instead stated, “With all due respect, it’s dark outside.”

It would have been such an ordinary evening to lose everything. People would have said we did everything right. It wouldn’t have mattered.

Nothing can reach a driver who isn’t looking up.

We just want to live.

These crashes can be prevented. Village of Lincolnwood and @idotimages
• Complete a road study and lower speeds on this stretch of Lincoln Ave (US-41)
• Add a raised crosswalk.
• Move the push-button signals to where trail users can reach them (they’re currently on the opposite side of each path).
• Enforce phone-in-hand driving at this crossing.
• Use automated speed enforcement wherever the law allows.

And when you drive: nothing on your screen is worth a person’s life.

If I am ever killed it won’t be by accident- it will be by [street] design. I don’t want sympathy. I want guerrilla infrastructure advocacy and tangible change, so no one else is taken.

If you’re looking for a parenting hack, start a bike bus!!!
You might find out that there’s a ton of hype and interest in your community. It’s the absolute best way to start your day for all ages. 11/10 recommend.

If you have the chance to start your Friday volunteering to help get kids to school via “bike bus” I strongly recommend it. Huge props to the organizers of Beaubien’s first bike bus and thanks for letting me and my smallest biker tag along in support!

Was driving on the WRONG side of the road in pouring rain to turn left and cut through a neighborhood with me and my child IN YOUR PATH worth it? Mind you (not that it matters) I’m in bright highlighter jacket, illuminated @lumos helmet, bright @ternbicycles head light, etc.
Drivers couldn’t care less about anyone outside of their vehicle and beep at you even when it’s their fault.

Sometimes I can’t believe how low the bar is- we just want to get home alive.
