The Dating Menu (2026) movie review
Score:6.6/10

[1]

It follows a chef seeks his teen crush on a dating app, creating unique meals for each Zelda he meets, as he faces uncertainty and the decline of the city's restaurants in Amos Why's bittersweet road movie.

There are many genres of movie that appeal to different people. I personally hold a place for rom-coms as those movies often bring comfort and little imagination. Hong Kong has not had many romcoms recently as the audience weren’t interested due to worries about its quality. However, they seemed to not have given up and particularly one has caught my attention.

A movie with charming characters. This movie features plenty of female characters aka Zelda along the journey of the protagonist Hark. Each of them were able to serve the story with their own characteristics that can make a little impact on Hark. Although lack of characterisation could easily make the audience feel like the side characters are a npc, each of their charm and background led to different connections and would bring empathy to the audience.

However, I guess not every character ties along the main plot, such as the single mother story was good in its own way, yet the connection was not too strong such as limited inspiration to Hark. While the brotherhood was delightful, I guess I didn’t like the role of fat tung. Although he serves to be the comedy part of the movie, there are moments that pull the audience out of the story.

A movie that does not underestimate its charm. As this is a movie following a chef, it contains loads of cooking scenes with well decorated cuisines. Each scene was handled with great cinematography. From the way Hark cooks, to lovely closeups of each dish, it does not hide the determination of making people’s mouths drilling.

However, the shots of the female characters tasting Hark’s food captures each of their small emotions, a good metaphor for expressing their first impression of Hark and a nice way to present their inner self. Also, it strengthens the authenticity as Hark pursues the progress and passion of cookin by @chickenbilly817

Mayday (2026) movie review
Score:6.8/10

[1]

When it comes to buddy action comedies, we would immediately think of the classics from the 80s to 90s. However, these types of movies have been “misses” in the last decades while comedies have also fallen off, leading streaming platforms to be their safety nets. Fortunately, there are some hits which encourage these types of popcorn movies to be made which ended up successfully. Therefore, was this a hit or a miss?

An action movie with sincere action sequences that needs improving. Hollywood action cinema has been seriously influenced by John Wick which many action movies aim for more realistic actions. There’s no doubt that the actors did quite a good job, especially Kenneth Branagh, a stranger to action cinema. It is impressive for him to pull off stunts in his 60s. However, the choreography shows lack of tension as some combat sequences contain slow movements, which narrows down the intensity. Despite the fact that the big sequences bring entertainment with creative cinematography and a solid score elevates each action sequence, it doesn’t hide the flaws from itself.

A formulaic story which was treated properly. It was pretty generic with the protagonists defeating the evil and becoming buddies in this great adventure. Although there were settings which you could feel made things convenient and ended up being a bit of a stretch, it does refuse to become mediocre. The pacing was handled pretty well which keeps the audience entertained, while the writers paid attention to characterisation. The main characters had their own background with similar personalities yet different environments leading to differences, which ended up having interesting interactions and microcosms to their own country. Eventually, they had their own growth and accomplished what they wanted from their inner hearts. The writers showed us that the protagonists were not random npcs, but they are flesh and blood that allowed the audience to feel them. Even though there are cliché circumstances, it manages to lift up the tension through the characters and it guarantees to have larger sca by @chickenbilly817

The Odyssey (2026) movie review
Score:8/10

[1]

As Barbheimer became a phenomenon in 2023, a director called Christopher Nolan has gained recognition that he has never expected before and widely praised due to his ambition and passion with movies while also having a great filmography of his own. With the success of Oppenheimer, Universal Studios offered a 250 million budget to let Nolan take a spin of an ancient Greek epic poem, letting Nolan make the first feature movie ever to be shot entirely on IMAX’s 70 mm film cameras. While the production becomes sensational, would the execution of the screenplay reach the same quality and suitable for an audience who knows nothing of ancient Greek poems, while also carrying its uniqueness?

A proper blockbuster that felt like a blockbuster. What makes Christopher Nolan movies to be a standout is that he truly used the budget to create big sequences while refusing to take the short path. Every spectacle in this movie takes you into this big world without noticing any CGI flaws, expressing the vibe of thousands of hard-working attitudes behind the camera. With the respect of shooting in real locations, the cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema mastered them. His work in this was remarkable with every shot having tension, emotion and with beauty inside. It was also impressive to let him handle the IMAX camera and knowing how the task should be done perfectly.

The movie has lots of ship scenes and scenes on a mountain, which made me impressed how the team still shot it in this huge camera. Nolan was known for using practical effects and great production design and he once again broke the limits. Not only does he stay loyal to realism, he wisely uses various tricks to shoot sequences such as the cyclops, giant Laestrygonians. However, what was most impressive was the wizard sequence. Whether how it was being made or the performances in it, it was a scene to be studied. Speaking of performances, the ensemble cast had exceeded lots of our expectations, everyone had their moments but I think Samantha Morton and Anne Hathaway performances were the one by @chickenbilly817

Obsession (2026) movie review
Score:8.3/10

Horror movies were living their best era and we thought it reached their peak. However, the results show no sign of slowing down as we witnessed a $750k independent movie made by a young youtuber creating a phenomenon around the world, bringing a new generation of audiences to cinemas and possibly reshaping Hollywood.

[Scroll to the next page for more]

Independent filmmaking brings a fresh new air to Hollywood. If you're one of those "freaks" who stalks independent short movies on YouTube, you're gonna get real high on this one. Whether it's the production, the editing, the lighting or even the score, it shows how independent this is as they took serious attention to it. It relies on real locations with a classic soft and low contrast color, while a tight pacing and the support of the "lofi" style music makes the story intriguing and the atmosphere to either make you feel comfortable or shit your pants. When lots of Hollywood blockbusters rely on green screens, having "no color" on their movie and struggle with pacing, this one surely makes us feel alive. Shoutout to Rock Burwell for making a terrific score. I bet many big job opportunities would come to him in the future.

A story that reshapes how horror movies could be. Horror movies bring out their terrors through plotlines featuring ghosts or monsters. However, the terror for this one comes out through humanity. Despite the fact that many other movies have done this concept, this one was probably the best execution of all of them as it attempts to be straight-forward with no confusing metaphors along the way. It lets us know each character's personality and the main plot within the first 15 minutes, while also setting up the darker side of the story, leading anticipation and confusion to the audience. When the terror happens, it instantly creates a funny or awkward connection to the audience who are currently dating while also unfolding the dark side of humanity by showing how men’s masculinity could reach.

The Furious (2026) movie review
Score:7.8/10

[1]

If you're a fan of action movies, you would heard the name Kenji Tanigaki. He has been a professional stunt coordinator in many Hong Kong and Japan action movies which leads to chances of directing his own movies. Although his first directional debut wasn't that lovely, this one truly does him justice as he is not holding back.

Straightforward storytelling leads to smooth actions. It contains a simple cliché plot and straightforward characterization or somewhat cringe dialogues. However, the charm of these storytelling is that it doesn't felt dragged or unnecessary. It often sets up an important emotional weight that could let audience expect how it could elevate and come to the highest point to conclude. For example, the story between the father and the daughter was cheesy yet the emotion weight was greatly executed for audience to see.

Intense and structured action sequences that caught our eyes. The movie is a masterclass of how to choreograph fight scenes that would not lost people's attention. With a compilation of chase, fight scenes, hand-to-hand combat, the intensity and craziness has reached a high point. Every move and camera angles brings out every craziness which brings a fresh air to action movies. Each character has their own fighting style which was well shown into each fight scenes. The final 5 person melee fight was one of the most intense and well choreographed fights in action cinema. Not only each charcter can represent themselves, it doesn't let us to loose attention to each and one of them.

The Sheep Detectives (2026) movie review
Score:7.5/10

[1]

It follows a shepherd who reads a murder mystery every night, pretending his sheep can understand. When he is found dead, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it.

Like everybody else, I have my doubts and knowing that this costs 75 million dollars, this is destined to be buried by big blockbusters. However, with word-of-mouth saying this is Knives Out with sheeps and also knowing that this is written by the guy who wrote Chernobyl and The Last of Us, it surely proves me wrong.

It is entertaining with interesting characters and surprises. With a murder-mystery comedy, being entertaining is the important key. It has a great humor that comes in naturally which might not give you a laugh but certainly a jolly good time. Every character and every sheep has their own characteristics which leave us memorable. Despite the fact that the opening was a bit draggy, it was still a solid way to set up the storyline and introduce the characters and eventually had a full circle which satisfied the audience.

One of the most important things of a murder mystery movie is that the audience has to be intrigued by the plot and guess who is the real murderer. This one has the audience guessing as everyone is a suspect and a possible motive. It gives certain details which lead you guessing because it drives you in many directions.

Project Hail Mary (2026) movie review
Score:9/10

[1]

From widely praised to great box office, I have basically heard nothing bad from this movie. Therefore, it has been painful for me to wait and to finally get the time to have a go. There was no bluffing. This is absolute cinema at its best.

The movie kicks off with our protagonist Grace, waking up in a spaceship without remembering who he was. Throughout the discovery, we were able to know Grace is a talkative scientist who has a boring and lonely life. However, what really makes the audience know him is the movie attempts to use flashbacks as part of Grace starting to remember the past things, while also creating a parallel of his current status and his past thoughts. This is an effective way to show how Grace has evolved while making him a well-rounded character. While Ryan Gosling is a safe option of playing this character, there is no doubt that he brings so much energy and emotions into this with lots of scenes that are basically just him. His performance was able to show Grace is a clever and kind person, passionate about what he does yet the passion has been depressed, led by fear and lack of confidence. However, there is also a character that reflects on him which left everyone memorable.

While act 1 focuses on how Grace ends up in the spaceship and starting to calm down, act 2 introduces a loveable alien called Rocky. He looks like he was made of rocks but his personality creates a connection to Grace. They have great dynamics with one being static and one being energetic, creating funny moments, while their similar experiences and same goals bring them close to each other. The movie intends to slowly build up the relationship between them, creating little moments, setting up the emotional tension. Therefore, when it was ready to let out at the biggest moment, the audience would collapse for this duo. Throughout their personality, it unfolds a touching emotion when they are helping each other.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) movie review
Score:6.3/10

[1]

What do you do after making a billion dollars of a cash grab movie? You make a sequel to it. Although it's surely gonna take everyone's money, the good thing is that everyone was willing to give it so. Therefore, was this worth the money?

It is good enough to do every new character justice. Even though I have a vague impression with these characters, they gave a great perspective to me. These characters have their own style and delightful in their own way. Princess Rosalina portrayed to be a strong yet heartwarming mother, Yoshi being cute and positive and Bowser Jr. being reckless like his dad. Everyone had come out just how the fans would imagine. However, I guess Fox McCloud had everyone bouncing their seats. Despite not knowing him personally, every frame of him literally proves that he is the coolest character among them. I'm thrilled that Glen Powell voiced this because the energy matched so well. However, I think they should've kept it as a surprise because his part was probably the only best thing in this movie.

The energy was not the same as the first one. Normally when movies do sequels, they try to add many new elements and make as many spectacles as possible. This one was not the exception. There are lots of beautiful moments and epic action scenes. Some may be delightful to watch, but lots of them didn't hit the mark. Making a big blockbuster, people are expected to be surprised or stunned by the next big sequence. However, they mostly felt bored by not elevating the scale. The first one had the 80s vibe with the strong brotherhood inside of it. This one just lost everything and became a standard adventure movie with no uniqueness.
