Welcome to the jungle of zucchini’s.

We are growing in ground this year & amended the spaces w/ our bokashi compost. Volunteer squash popped up and we let them grow - wanting to see what magic had sprouted. To my great happiness, it was zucchini the only plant that struggled w/ germinating cause something kept eating my seeds.

If anyone grabbed a surprise squash from us at the compost workshop this last weekend, it should be a zucchini 🌱

We had a great time at the compost workshop hosted by Camp Fire Restoration Project 🌱

All kinds of composting were spoke about - thermophilic, vermicompost & bokashi style. Learned new things and had a wonderful time connecting with others in the composting community. It’s beautiful to see the passion folks have for good soil & a healthy planet. Thank y’all for having us out 💚

#imo5 pile with 1 year composted cow manure for the #nitrogen source, wood chips (not the finest grade 😑), rice bran, rice hull, #insectfrass and #biochar.

Turning the #compost piles today, adding some more amendments to them and rebuilding the setup!

They have been #EM1 dominant piles with bokashi compost used as the "green" part. Today they are getting boosted with #woodchips , #biochar , #insectfrass , #imo & some #johnsonsubioreactor style PVC for aeration.

These wont be left for for the typical 12 months but will prolly be pulled down in only 2 months or less to check on them & add some @catalystbioamendments compost to expand their #biological growth even further. by @chicocompostcollective

This pit was made 5ft wide X 2ft deep.
Designed for the lowest smoke with an open flame #biochar burn.
From a more native, natural and holistic outlook;
This style of burn is a more interconnected and a "true" bio-char method. Being that the char is being burned & made In the earths "biology" (living soil).
Of course even Char Not made in living soil or even dirt but instead a steel drum or other styles, then becomes "Bio"-char once we activate & inoculate it with our microbe & nutrient rich compost teas or ferments.
Which ever method used, if it doesnt smoke much and it doesnt turn to ash then the method is doing its job😉🤙 *Ill be making a 55gal steel drum bio-char Retort soon with a video to follow*

- If you use this pit method its good to make sure your soil and pit are microbialy active with a watered in compost or a soil probiotic tea at least a day before you burn and after your finished.
- In the off season when we arnt using this pit its good to keep the soil & biology active with plant life like cover crops or native species and keep it alive like your garden. When you come back next season you chop down the living green material for compost and make you next bio-char burn in your fresh biology rich pit!
- We want to always add to it an never deplete it :)
When your done with the pit for good, bury it back up and you have an incredibly rich garening spot! taken in Chico, California by @chicocompostcollective

It was a rough day of adult sized pick up sticks after chopping down the #biochar hardwood "slash" load I got from @westgatehardwoods. Thanks Tom for the donation!

Suns out, microbe guns out! Its almost time to get the next big batch of #bokashi going now that spring is around the corner :)
This is last years 50gal batch of bokashi. We've used 10 gallons of it and with it decomposed almost 400 gallons of green waste from the restaurants here in Chico, Ca.
