I think more people in cybersecurity need to learn how to play chess against themselves.

You need to be able to sit on BOTH sides of the table.

How would I build this?

Now switch sides.

How would I break it?

How would I detect that?

How would I evade that detection?

How would I stop myself from doing that?

Keep switching sides.

And I'll be blunt: way too many people getting into cybersecurity want to skip straight to "I want to be a pen tester."

They want to break shit before they've learned how the shit they're breaking actually works.

Pretty much all of my pen tester friends also know how to BUILD the things they're attacking. They understand networks, infrastructure, operating systems, applications, authentication, cloud, code, and how all those pieces fit together.

That's part of WHY they're good at breaking them.

Think about demolition.

If your job is to efficiently demolish a building, you still need to know a hell of a lot about construction. Where are the load-bearing walls? How was the structure built? Where are the utilities? What happens if you remove this piece before that one?

Sure, you can keep swinging a fucking hammer until something eventually falls down.

But someone who understands how the building was constructed knows exactly where to hit it.

Cybersecurity is the same way.

If all you care about is learning exploits and breaking shit, but you don't understand what you're attacking, why it was designed that way, or how all the pieces interact, you're going to have a hard time becoming a GOOD pen tester.

And defenders aren't exempt either.

If you only know how to build and defend something but can't put yourself in the attacker's seat, you're missing half the board.

Cybersecurity isn't about memorizing one side of the game.

Build it. Break it. Detect it. Evade it. Defend it.

Then flip the fucking board around and do it again.

Under no circumstances should these kind of streaming boxes promising free contrmt be in your home or especially places of business. To the point if I even see them in a restaurant or business I am leaving immediately. I dont care if they are friend or family there's a whole lot going on in these boxes that this far beyond normal malware.
The talk was a "No Electronics Allowed" format meaning we checked devices and even ejected people who turned devices back on. This is what many consider a "skytalk style"

Quick heads up because I get this a lot: I barely use TikTok or Instagram DMs, and I simply do not have the bandwidth to keep up with everyone there.

That is exactly why I have a Discord and Matrix community. Come hang out, ask questions, share projects, and actually connect with everyone else too.

Links are in my bio.

Apparently “let me fix this one thing” turned into a 20-day GitHub streak.

I’ve been on a roll lately building things. Cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity tools, ham radio software, stream automation, Linux utilities. Half the time I’m working on one project and realize something else would be useful, so now that’s a project too.

If you’re ever wondering whether I’m alive and healthy, check GitHub. If I’m still turning minor inconveniences into entire software projects, I’m doing alright.

Even with the lab still being rebuilt after the flood, there’s been plenty to tinker with and put out there.

A lot of this starts with something I need for myself, but I open source it because someone else might have the same problem. Or maybe they just want to pull it apart and learn how it works. That’s how I learned a lot of this shit in the first place.

I wholeheartedly agree with Linus here. Especially the part about expecting people to understand what they are doing.

Using AI doesn’t absolve you of responsibility for your code. You still need to review it, test it, understand the permissions it asks for, and explain why it works. If your entire explanation is “the AI said so,” you haven’t done your job.

But dismissing someone’s work purely because AI was involved, without even reviewing it? What exactly are you evaluating at that point?

I use AI in my projects. I also challenge it, reject suggestions, and make it justify decisions. Sometimes it gets things hilariously wrong. Knowing enough to catch that is part of using the tool properly.

There are legitimate arguments about AI, including privacy, resource consumption, and corporate control. I’m not asking anyone to pretend those concerns don’t exist. But they don’t automatically tell you whether a particular piece of code is good, secure, or useful.

If you find a flaw in my work, show me. That gives me something I can fix. “You used AI” tells me nothing about whether the damn thing works.

Cybersecurity isn't entry-level. Many grads lack hands-on skills, like not knowing PowerShell. Some of these anti-AI purity tests have gotten ridiculous. Look at ArtCraft: an attempt to build free, open source alternatives to Adobe, dismissed by some because AI helped build it.

I even heard someone identifying as a communist argue, “It may be open source, but you’ll never read the code.”

People use Linux, Firefox, LibreOffice, and Chromium without studying their code. They still benefit from others being able to inspect, fix, modify, and redistribute it. Those freedoms don’t disappear because you personally can’t program. Other people contributing expertise is kind of the point.

Some of you describe fighting corporate greed as a war. These corporations have money, lawyers, and entire teams dedicated to individual products. In your own analogy, they have guns and heavy artillery.

Meanwhile, you’re telling us we can’t even use basic guns because you don’t like guns. You want us fighting their artillery with swords, bows, and arrows, then getting lectured for picking up something that helps us fight back.

AI can let a developer who knows what they’re doing tackle work that would otherwise take a team. It doesn’t replace every specialty or eliminate review, but it changes what one person has the bandwidth to build.

I can build a lot of the stuff I’m making without AI. I cannot build it nearly as fast. That difference has finally given me the bandwidth to tackle dozens of projects I’ve wanted to do for YEARS. And I have more coming.

You can refuse a tool. Demanding everyone else accept that limitation is where you lose me.

ArtCraft still needs to prove itself. Criticize its functionality, security, licensing, and maintainability. “AI wrote it” doesn’t excuse broken crap. I’m responsible for what I ship, and AI companies aren’t above criticism either.

But some of you have become so anti-AI that you’re recycling arguments against software freedom and defending the corporate control you claim to oppose.

Adobe doesn’t need to win you over if we’re too busy disqualifying each other’s alternatives.

Sponsor me senpai. I’m right here in your backyard, Micro Center! 🤣

I started with “let’s improve the stream quality” and somehow ended up planning another Elgato 4K Pro, an overhead camera, a dedicated transcoding server, multiple stream routes, and a cloud relay.

Apparently years of working in IT and Cybersecurity means I can’t upgrade a camera without also planning for failover.

The goal is 4K60 and making it easier for more of you to watch whatever your internet can handle. Plus a better view of whatever hardware I’m taking apart and hopefully putting back together.

@elgato , @microcenter , I feel like we’re all invested in this nonsense at this point.

Guess a Micro Center trip is happening this week.
