Häxan @ The Detroit Public Library

Sunday, October 18 • 2-4 PM • FREE

Detroit Public Library Main Branch

Resonant Soundscapes’ 2026 “Scoring Global Silent Film” project comes to a close at the Detroit Public Library with a bold and dramatic improvised live-score performance accompanying Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 silent horror classic Häxan.

This year’s expanded Resonant Soundscape ensemble featuring Marcus Elliot, Michael Malis, Garrett Schumann, Sara Tea, Chien-An Yuan, and Julie Zhu will return to blend jazz, electronic, and heavy metal aesthetics as they fill the library’s stunning and historic Adam Strohm Hall with a wash of electronic and acoustic sound.

Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922) is a Swedish-Danish silent film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen that blends a historical documentary essay with expressionist horror and dramatic re-enactments.

Inspired by the 15th-century inquisitor’s manual the Malleus Maleficarum, the film examines the roots of superstition, hysteria, and the brutal systemic persecution of women accused of witchcraft.

“Part documentary essay, part horror mood board, Häxan is an episodic film, which across seven chapters explores a range of beliefs and themes throughout the Western history of occultism, in particular focussing on witchcraft during the Medieval period, and the historic persecution of women accused of practising it. No one describes the film better than the director himself who suggested at the time that “my film has no continuous story, no ‘plot’ – it could perhaps best be classified as a cultural history lecture in moving pictures”. - BBC / Adam Scovell taken in Detroit Public Library by @chienanyuan

We’re back! And hey, it’s Bandcamp Friday again! Thank you all for your patience and continued interest in 1473. It’s been a massive year of change and transition so things definitely slowed down a bit - so yes, super appreciate you all!

1473.44 is Sara Tea’s ‘Tempered Faith (live at Moondog Cafe)’

https://saratea.bandcamp.com/album/tempered-faith-live-at-moondog-cafe

I LOVE SARA TEA’S MUSIC. First and foremost, there’s that. While I am pretty content with where 1473 is these days, her music makes me wish I had started a New Age / Ambient cassette label as well. What I love about Sara’s music is while it certainly rests in the ambient space, it’s inherently tactile - it sometimes feels less like she’s playing music and more that she’s molding it. Every gesture, every movement - it’s all felt in how the sounds swirl around you but also, in how it resonates in your inner ear.

"Tempered Faith reflects the central idea behind the music: a faith in creativity and community that has been tested, slowed down, and reshaped, but not abandoned. Rather than pursuing spectacle or urgency, the set follows small sparks of curiosity and allows them room to unfold.

Created during lockdown while Sara envisioned community with her own physical health limitations and developed over time into a live set, the work grew from a desire to create a space where people could pause, listen, gather, and rest.

Performed live at Moondog Cafe in Detroit, Tempered Faith is both a sonic environment and a love letter to the abandoned self; the parts of us we can lose when survival, productivity, and caring for others take over. It is an invitation to return to curiosity, to make something simply because it brings us alive, and to recognize that small acts of creativity and care can still create meaningful spaces for connection."

Special kudos to everyone at Moondog Cafe in Detroit. To know them all is to know when a cultural anchor has arrived.

Also, special shout to Brian McFarlane for being one of Metro Detroit’s best curators and good dudes all around.

Again, it's Bandcamp Friday! 100% of the $ goes directly to Sara! Please support!

Hi all, I know it's been a minute but hey, new music!

I originally planned on Qaidam to be the centerpiece of my upcoming album. It's based on a chord sequence of Ryuichi Sakamoto's (big surprise!) off Hector Zazou's album "Sahara Blue" that I've loved since I first heard it some 32 years ago.

However, halfway through working on the album, I realized that it needed to be split in two - two concepts were at play, one melodic and the other more sculptural - it just had to happen. Unfortunately, because of this, Qaidam lost its place. I think it's because it sits in the middle of the two worlds of sound and processes that I'm currently immersed in but just can't find a place for it in the sequencing.

So, here it is in its unfinished form - just putting it out there now or I will, as I usually do, just sit on it forever.

Hope you enjoy and as always, thanks for listening!

CLUSTER Museum’s lease at 307 N. Main St. ends September 30 and after careful consideration, we’ve decided not to renew. Rent in downtown Ann Arbor keeps rising and, like many independent arts spaces, we’ve made the choice to keep our budget serving our mission.

CLUSTER Museum is committed to creating contemporary art experiences with and for Ann Arbor, so we see this as a pivot, not an end. Some of our best work has been in the partnerships we’ve made and our engagement with you. It reminds us that our strength was never the address, but what happens when people gather around the work. We’re part of a growing wave of independent arts organizations rethinking what a museum needs to be.

CLUSTER’s Core Intention #5: CLUSTER Museum is a work in progress, nimble and able to pivot, and we mean that as a commitment, not an apology.

Our Phase 2 plan shifts to a nomadic model, occupying unused and unusual spaces across Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County. This flexibility means making art accessible in places you least expect, and engaging new neighbors with each event series. As we adjust to this new model, our pace will shift too, until CLUSTER Museum finds its next home.

Stay connected through our newsletter and social media for upcoming events and locations, and ways to stay involved.

In the meantime, we will see you in September for some fun events! by @chienanyuan

::: TUESDAY, AUGUST 25 :::

The Keefe Jackson-Jakob Heinemann Quartet is a far-flung free jazz ensemble, with members residing in Chicago, Los Angeles and Oslo, Norway. Keefe Jackson (tenor sax) and Adam Shead (percussion) are active members of Chicago’s creative music community and bassist/composer Jakob Heinemann now hails from LA. They recorded an album for Chicago’s Irritable Mystic Records last summer and are joined on this tour by a special guest clarinetist from Oslo.

In support is a new trio of improvisors from Detroit and Ann Arbor. Percussionist, composer and Fire Music Mondays curator Jonathan Barahal Taylor is joined by trumpet phenom Allen Dennard and electronic artist and 1473 label head Chien An-Yuan for an evening of collaborative music-making and sound-shaping.

Advance tickets will go live today via Eventbrite for $10 and will be available at the door for $15. We look forward to another expedition into sound together!
