Christopher Lee’s journey to Middle-earth was far more personal than simply being cast as Saruman.

Lee had been a devoted Tolkien reader long before Peter Jackson’s films existed. He said that when he first read The Lord of the Rings, he was “bowled over” by it and continued rereading the book every year. He even described Tolkien’s creation as “one of the great works of all time.”

Lee also had the extraordinary distinction of meeting Tolkien himself in Oxford during the 1950s. The meeting took place at the Eagle and Child, the famous pub Tolkien frequented. Lee later recalled being completely overwhelmed when Tolkien walked in, having already begun reading his books.

When Lee learned that The Lord of the Rings was finally being made into a major film trilogy, it fulfilled a dream he had carried since first reading the books. At a 2002 press conference, he explained that he had once thought a film adaptation was impossible because of its enormous scale, but had always dreamed that if it were made, he could somehow be part of it. “Dreams don’t come true very often,” he said, “but in this case it did.”

Interestingly, Saruman was not Lee’s first choice. He had always imagined himself as Gandalf and even read for the role when he met Peter Jackson. Jackson, however, had already wanted Lee for Saruman. Lee later learned that Jackson had grown up watching his films and had specifically envisioned him as the White Wizard. His agent eventually received the message that Lee was wanted for Saruman.

And Lee was uniquely prepared for the part. He knew Tolkien’s work intimately, had met the author himself, and had spent decades imagining what Middle-earth might look like on screen.

For Christopher Lee, playing Saruman wasn’t simply another legendary role in an extraordinary career. It was the realization of a dream that had begun when he first opened Tolkien’s books.

Over twenty years later, the distinct aesthetics created for the different cultures in The Lord of the Rings are still completely unmatched. Whether you are looking at the cozy, sunlit warmth of the Hobbits in the Shire, the regal and rugged architecture of Men, or the ethereal, magical lighting of the Elves, every single frame looks like a classical painting.

The design team even managed to make the heavy, geometric underground stone halls of the Dwarves and the terrifying, jagged darkness of Sauron and Mordor look incredibly striking in their own unique ways. Every prop, sword, and landscape perfectly tells the story of its people.

The Departure From The Grey Havens 🌅

On this day in Middle-earth — 29 September, T.A. 3021 — one of the greatest chapters in Middle-earth’s history quietly came to an end.

At the Grey Havens, Frodo and Bilbo Baggins were reunited with Elrond, Galadriel, and Gandalf. Círdan the Shipwright prepared a white ship, and after years of war, loss, and sacrifice, they departed Mithlond and sailed into the West.

Frodo and Bilbo were permitted to make the journey because of the extraordinary burden they had borne as Ring-bearers. For Elrond and Galadriel, it marked the end of their long years in Middle-earth. For Gandalf, it was the completion of the task for which he had been sent there by the Valar.

Their departure marked the end of the Third Age. With the Three Rings passing from Middle-earth, the power of the Elves was fading, while the Dominion of Men began.

Samwise, Merry, and Pippin remained on the shores of Middle-earth, watching the ship disappear into the West. Sam would eventually follow Frodo many years later, but on this day, the age that had shaped their lives was passing beyond the Sea.

The Ring was destroyed. Sauron was defeated. Aragorn ruled as King. The Shire had been restored.

And then, quietly, the old world began to depart.

29 September, T.A. 3021 — the final voyage of the Ring-bearers, and the beginning of the Dominion of Men.

Even the greatest heroes in Middle-earth have clumsy days! 🗡️😂

If you ever feel like you are messing up at work, just remember this legendary moment from the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings. Because they used rotoscoping (drawing directly over live-action reference footage), when the actor playing Aragorn completely tripped over his own sword while running, the filmmakers just said "whatever" and animated the mistake straight into the final movie!

Taking a tour of New Zealand to see where Lord of the Rings was filmed is the ultimate fan dream, and this guy (@nouguyflex) actually made it come true! 🏔️🗺️

He managed to find the exact GPS coordinates for some of the most iconic scenes in the trilogy and embarked on an epic adventure across the country to perfectly recreate them. The side-by-side matches he pulled off are incredibly accurate.

You can see him standing exactly where Edoras was built, looking out over the exact spot the Oliphaunts marched (complete with a hilarious wireframe drawing), tracking footprints across the plains, and even resting against the exact same tree root as Frodo. Best of all, he dropped the actual coordinates right on the photos so other fans can go find these exact spots!

Imagine being so iconic that an entire country puts your face on their official currency! 🧙‍♂️🪙

During the height of the Lord of the Rings hype, New Zealand fully embraced their role as the real-life Middle-earth and minted actual, legal tender coins featuring characters from the trilogy. Sir Ian McKellen was presented with this brilliant 50-cent piece featuring Gandalf.

Naturally, he had the best possible reaction to seeing his own face on a coin, posing for the cameras and wearing it over his eye like a monocle.

In Tolkien’s early drafts, the ranger who meets the hobbits at the Prancing Pony wasn’t a noble Dunadan human named Aragorn. He was a hobbit named “Trotter” who wore wooden shoes (clogs) because his feet had been tortured in Mordor. ✨

LOTR Artist Spotlight: Ray Minn’s Vision of Arda 🎨

What I love about Ray Minn’s artwork is the way he imagines Middle-earth beyond the versions we already know. His paintings feel colorful, dreamlike, and almost like glimpses into a forgotten age of Arda.

Ray has been creating fantasy artwork since he began drawing in 2020, inspired by Tolkien’s worldbuilding and especially the sense of history and wonder found throughout The Silmarillion. His work brings together influences from illuminated manuscripts, Japanese woodblocks, stained glass, Gothic architecture, comic books, and fantasy illustration.

Here’s what Ray shared about his connection to Tolkien and his art:

“I have always been a big fan of Tolkien’s worldbuilding and I was inspired by the chivalric deeds and mystical nostalgia that his narratives, especially the Silmarillion, evoked. As a daydreamer and fan of human history, art, and cultures long gone and distant to us, his work touched me in a way few other media have.”

Ray’s goal is to explore a more colorful and flourishing side of Arda. From a more glorious Minas Tirith and Edoras to the gold and silver hues of Lothlórien and the Elven cultures of Gondolin and Tirion, his work imagines Middle-earth before the War of the Ring changed it forever.

“Here, I try to offer a glimpse into a more utopian and thriving world, one beyond the threat of Sauron. A mythical, bygone time before the events of the War of the Ring that left Middle-Earth changed.”

It’s a beautiful reminder that Tolkien’s world is vast enough to inspire countless interpretations, each offering us another way to imagine the places and ages we never got to see.
