Scientific progress has brought new possibilities for children with cancer, but too many families still face limited treatment options and lasting health challenges. The recently released Pediatric Cancer Landscape 2026, a joint report from ACS CAN and the Alliance for Childhood Cancer, examines these gaps and offers policy recommendations to help move research and drug development forward.

Children’s Cancer Cause is proud to contribute as an Alliance member, with our founder, Susan L. Weiner, PhD, serving on the report’s steering committee, along with board member Michael Link, MD. The updated recommendations call for sustained research investment, stronger data sharing, more accessible clinical trials, and solutions to drug-development barriers and chronic shortages -- all with healthy survivorship as a priority.

Visit our blog to explore the report’s highlights and learn about how this shared advocacy agenda can inform our work as we look ahead to a new Congress.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month has an important connection to childhood cancer survivorship. 🩷🎗️

Some treatments for childhood cancer - including chest radiation and certain chemotherapy drugs - can increase the risk of breast cancer later in life. Depending on treatment history, survivors may need screening earlier than the general population.

If you’re a childhood cancer survivor and you're unsure about your personal risk and screening guidelines, bring your treatment summary or survivorship care plan to your healthcare provider and ask about it.

Survivors deserve clear information and follow-up care tailored to their needs. Join us in raising awareness about the lasting effects of childhood cancer and the importance of access to lifelong survivorship care.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), in partnership with the Alliance for Childhood Cancer, released its new Childhood Cancer Landscape 2026 report this week. This report updates the 2016 landscape assessment and examines the challenges facing childhood cancer research and drug development. Children’s Cancer Cause founder Susan Weiner served on the steering committee for the original report and also this new version.

The new report is accompanied by policy recommendations that call for sustained investment in pediatric research and clinical trial networks; better collection and sharing of data so researchers can learn from every patient; more flexible approaches to studying treatments for rare cancers; and policies that encourage pediatric drug development and address shortages of essential medicines. Swipe to read them in full ➡️

The recommendations also prioritize research to reduce treatment-related harm and improve survivors’ long-term quality of life, while ensuring patients and families have a meaningful voice in shaping progress. We look forward to sharing more details in the coming days, and we congratulate the Steering Committee, report authors, reviewers, and contributors for this comprehensive publication.

Our new Survivor Survey report comes during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and at a consequential time for federal cancer research. Survivors responding to the survey repeatedly urged policymakers to protect research funding, develop less toxic treatments, and devote greater attention to the lifelong consequences of childhood cancer treatment.

“Please fund survivorship research and long-term follow-up care just as much as you fund initial treatment research,” one survivor wrote. “We don't disappear after we ring the bell - we live with the consequences of treatment for decades.”

Just 6% of surveyed survivors express satisfaction with today’s federal government in addressing the needs of young adult survivors of childhood cancer. One respondent described recent funding cuts and uncertainty around medical research as “massively destabilizing.”

Survivors also called for better transitions from pediatric to adult healthcare, affordable insurance coverage for lifelong screenings and follow-up, greater mental health support, and policies addressing the educational, employment and financial consequences of childhood cancer.

Maurquez was six years old when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Maurquez has overcome tremendous adversity and carries a deep passion for serving his community and fighting for justice. Today, he's a first-generation college student in his final year at Stanford University and a three-time Children’s Cancer Cause College Scholar.

He’s also using his experience to serve others.

Last spring, Maurquez organized a community blood drive on campus. The response was remarkable: 92 donors participated, 61 of them giving blood for the first time. The drive collected 81 units of blood, potentially helping up to 243 people.

And he’s not stopping there. Maurquez has also helped childhood cancer survivors navigate college admissions and scholarships, and his latest give-back projects help fund tutoring sessions for kids receiving treatment and purchase art supplies for patients.

As Maurquez says, “These projects are rooted in the gaps I witnessed firsthand as a childhood cancer survivor.”

This September - #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth - we celebrate survivors like Maurquez who make the road a little easier for those who come after them. We're so honored to be a part of his story 🎗️

Childhood cancer doesn’t end when treatment does.

In our new 2026 Survey of Survivors, over one hundred childhood and adolescent cancer survivors shared what life after cancer really looks like.

Swipe through for some of the key findings, including:
🎗️ Nearly half named relapse, recurrence, or a second cancer as a top health concern.
🎗️ More than 2 in 3 said their cancer experience still affects their emotional well-being -- holding true even for those treated decades ago.
🎗️ Survivors described barriers to lifelong care, financial burdens, and difficulty navigating the transition into adult healthcare.

This September, awareness means listening to survivors -- and acting on what they tell us.
