“A typeface is the voice of the brand.” ✍🏾

In this conversation on The Art School Graduate Podcast, @jobosonchisa breaks down why typography is far more than just letters on a screen.

“If you take type away, people might see what your brand is about… but they won’t be able to hear you.”

A typeface carries emotion. It shapes perception.

It can invite play, seriousness, trust, energy, or culture before a single word is even read.
For designers, this is a reminder that typography isn’t decoration, it’s communication.

African typography cannot be built by one person alone. 🌍✍🏾

In this episode of The Art School Graduate Podcast, @jobosonchisa talks about the importance of sharing knowledge, documenting culture, and creating a ripple effect for the future of African design.

“There’s a lot of work that needs to be done.”
Instead of gatekeeping creativity, he believes the future of African typography will be shaped collectively, by many designers, many voices, and many perspectives working together.

The next generation of design won’t come from one “genius.” It will come from a movement.

Been sitting with thoughts of type not being passive.
One where it doesn’t just carry meaning but perceives it.
One where it sees.

This has led me to exploring “Anya” (currently a working title cos “Looku Looku” is also a contender lol); a font where letterforms have eyes. And uses them.

Still a work in progress 👁️

TOUKI GROTESK V.1! 🟡

Named after the Wolof word for “journey,” Touki Grotesk is a contemporary grotesque sans inspired by the typographic language of early post-colonial Africa.

In that era, the Latin script, though foreign in origin, was reinterpreted through local practices, materials, and cultural expression. The result was bold, improvised, and distinctly African.

Touki Grotesk doesn’t just imitate that history.
It extends it.

V.1 includes 14 styles and supports 820+ Latin-based languages.
Now available. Link in bio.

🌍 TE Lecture Series: Type Design for African Languages

🗓️ Friday | October 3rd, 2025, 1-2 PM ET
🎥 30–45 min talks + Q&A
📍 Online | Free to attend (donations welcome)

Join us for a series of conversations exploring the challenges of language support, diacritic design, and the role of type design in language revitalization.

In this session, we’ll speak with @jobosonchisa, a Nigerian type and brand designer, about Type Design for African Languages and his work with @udifoundry. We’ll explore the cultural, linguistic, and design considerations involved in creating type that elevates African stories and reflects the continent’s languages, character sets, visual traditions, and cultures. Chisaokwu will share his journey in type design, how his work challenges industry expectations, and his approach to authenticity, self-determination, and cultural representation.

We’ll also discuss questions such as: How can designers expand access and equity in type design for African languages? What gaps exist in traditional typography education and resources? How can type support cultural identity, linguistic nuance, and visual expression across Africa?

About Chisaokwu:

Chisaokwu Joboson (he/him) is a Nigerian type and brand designer passionate about reflecting African culture and telling African stories through letterforms. He is the founder of Ụdị Foundry, an independent type foundry that creates expressive, culturally rooted typefaces. His work explores how typography can embody African languages, scripts, and visual traditions while challenging the dominance of Western narratives in design. He has spoken at international design events, including ATypI, and is an advocate for growing type education and access in Africa. Through his practice, Chisaokwu aims to expand the creative possibilities of African typography and inspire the next generation of designers.
