Burnout can creep up on any of us. In this video, I share a few practical ways to recognize it and begin dealing with it.

These ideas connect with what I’ll be teaching at the Edmonton Construction Association’s Mental Health Skills in the Trades course on November 4. I’ll be introducing cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) tools and techniques to help you manage your own mental health—including burnout, stress, and the everyday situations that can take a toll.

The course is for people across the industry, including health and safety professionals and the boots-on-the-ground workforce. Everyone is welcome.

I hope you’ll check out the video, and I’d love to see you at the course!

This is Arron. A 488 pipe fitter just like myself. I actually remeber him from some of the first jobs I was ever on when I was coming up in the trades.

Arron suffered a spinal injury that makes him very immobile. Unable to work and looking for solutions in the medical community he was seeking treatment for chronic pain.

One day I spoke about my course and coaching at a union meeting and Arron approached me asking if I would take him on as a client.

We used the Monad Mental health society fund to pay for sessions for Arron and worked towards coaching CBT for chronic pain.

Arron learned methods of pacing his day to day work in order to not overwhelm his nervous system. He learned progressive muscle relaxation techniques to calm his body down during flare ups and together we went for walks and worked on the tools.

Well today we hit the gym. Light lifting , treadmill, even some massage chair after. Chronic pain doesn’t have to be a struggle that you face all alone. You can learn tools to better equip you to deal with chronic pain.

Most importantly I’m just so happy to have been able to help out a brother, a pipe fitter just like me. It’s been an honour coaching Arron and it’s been amazing watching his progress. by @chittypaint

One year ago today, The Working Man’s Guide to Mental Health was published on Amazon.

Looking back, I’m honestly amazed at how much can change in a single year.

What started as a book written to bring practical mental health skills to tradespeople has continued to grow. It has now been translated into French, expanded into a full training course, and developed into a Learning Management System (LMS) that can be taken through the Alberta Construction Training Institute in both Edmonton and Calgary, or completed online from anywhere in Canada.

I’m incredibly grateful to ACTI for believing in this vision enough to invest their time, resources, and expertise to help bring it to life. Knowing that this material can now reach even more workers is something I never take for granted.

To everyone who has supported me by reading the book, attending a talk, taking the course, sharing my work, or simply encouraging me along the way, thank you. You’ve been part of this journey.

If there’s one thing this past year has taught me, it’s dream bigger than you think you should. Stay consistent. Believe in yourself, even when the path isn’t obvious. Amazing things can happen in a year when you refuse to give up.

Here’s to the next chapter. by @chittypaint

Debt is depressing.

Let’s not pretend money isn’t on our minds. When you’re struggling financially, debt can become a constant source of stress that chips away at your mood, your motivation, and your mental health. Financial hardship and depression are often closely connected, and one can easily make the other worse.

So what do you do when your mind starts spiraling down the “I’m in debt” rabbit hole?

In this video, I walk through one of the most effective Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) tools: the Thought Record. It’s often called the workhorse of CBT because it helps you identify automatic negative thoughts, challenge distorted thinking, and replace it with more balanced, realistic perspectives.

A Thought Record won’t erase your debt, but it can stop your debt from taking over your mind. When your thinking becomes clearer, you’re better able to solve problems, take action, and avoid the cycle where stress and depression make your financial situation even harder to manage.

Your debt belongs at the bank, not in your head or your mood.

Thanks so much @kristianltd for having me. Edmonton, Saskatoon and Calgary! It was so awesome meeting your whole crew and getting to sit down and chat with some good people who really put a lot into their work.

Mental health starts with conversations but is built through education of tools that people can actually use. Providing your crews with my book as well as having me come and speak was not only a double support for me and @triskelmhs but also for your workers. You really show your care and appreciation for people by providing them with these opportunities to educate themselves in tolls and skills for mental health efficacy! by @chittypaint

I am truly honoured to be partnering with @kristianltd for a series of speaking engagements across the prairies this spring!

-Saskatchewan – May 28
-Edmonton – June 4
- Calgary – June 11

I’ll be speaking to the incredible staff of Kristian Electric about work-life balance and sharing real, practical tools rooted in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to support their mental health and overall wellbeing.
One of the things I’m most passionate about is this: we don’t have to wait until things get hard to start taking care of our mental health. These tools are about being proactive, building resilience and balance before we reach a breaking point.
Thank you to the leadership at Kristian Electric for investing in your people. That kind of commitment makes all the difference. I can’t wait to connect with your teams! @triskelmhs by @chittypaint

Today I had the opportunity to speak with the team at DIALOG about cognitive behavioural therapy tools, mental health, and the importance of building practical skills for emotional resilience.

Walking into an architecture firm as an oil pipefitter might seem like two completely different worlds but conversations like this remind me that stress, pressure, self-doubt, burnout, and emotional struggle are human experiences, not industry-specific ones.

Whether you work with blueprints, welding torches, spreadsheets, or steel, the mind still follows the same patterns. The way we speak to ourselves matters. The habits we build matter. The emotional tools we carry matter.

One of the most rewarding parts of this work is seeing people realize that mental health skills are not just for therapy offices, they belong in workplaces, job sites, boardrooms, and everyday life.

Thank you to everyone at DIALOG for the openness, engagement, and thoughtful discussion today. It was an incredible experience sharing these conversations with such a creative and professional team.

Mental health is not just a personal issue, it’s a workplace safety and performance issue.

On May 21st at the Edmonton Construction Association, we’ll be hosting an important mental health training event designed specifically for the trades and industrial workforce.

-Val O’Leary will be teaching QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training , practical tools that help workers recognize warning signs, start conversations, and connect people to support.

-Landon Barrowman, author of The Working Man’s Guide to Mental Health, will be teaching Mental Health Skills in the Trades. A CBT-based course designed specifically for workers, supervisors, and industrial crews.
This course focuses on:
• Building self-efficacy and resilience
• Managing stress and emotional overload
• Understanding thoughts, emotions, and behaviours
• Developing practical coping tools
• Improving peer-to-peer mental health communication
Studies continue to show that Canadian companies lose billions annually to absenteeism and presenteeism, when workers are physically present but mentally overwhelmed and unable to perform at full capacity.
Investing in mental health education helps:
•Improve morale and productivity
•Reduce burnout and absenteeism
•Strengthen workplace culture
•Build safer, healthier crews
•Normalize conversations around mental health
This training is built for workers, spoken in a language workers understand, and focused on practical tools that can be applied immediately both on and off the job site.

There’s an old teaching about two wolves that live inside each of us.
One wolf feeds on anger, fear, resentment, shame, hopelessness, and self-destruction.
The other feeds on discipline, courage, compassion, accountability, growth, and purpose.

When they fight who will win ?

The wolf that grows… the one you feed.

What many people don’t realize is that modern psychology and neuroscience echo this same idea.

Every thought you repeat, every behavior you reinforce, and every emotional pattern you practice strengthens neural pathways in the brain. This is called neuroplasticity it’s the brain’s ability to rewire itself through repetition and experience.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) helps people become aware of the “wolf” they’ve been feeding automatically.
Negative self-talk, avoidance, catastrophic thinking, anger, hopelessness, and destructive habits can become deeply conditioned pathways. But those pathways are not permanent.

Through CBT tools like:

* thought records
* behavioral activation
* emotional awareness
* reframing cognitive distortions
* intentional habit building

…people can begin creating new neural pathways and healthier emotional responses over time.

You are not doomed to remain the person your pain trained you to become.
The brain changes through practice.
The mind changes through awareness.
And your life changes through repeated action.

Feed the wolf that builds your future.

There’s a strange strength that comes from being honest with yourself.

Today, while putting together a barbecue, I ended up having a real conversation with myself about emotional wounds, the parts of us that still carry hurt, fear, rejection, shame, anger, or grief. Instead of pushing those feelings away, I tried something different: I listened to them.

What I found was insight.

A lot of the time we try to “fix” ourselves without first understanding what the wound is actually trying to tell us. In cognitive behavioral therapy, awareness is often the first step toward change. When we slow down enough to identify our emotional patterns, we can begin to understand the thoughts, beliefs, and experiences underneath them.

This video isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about showing that vulnerability, reflection, and honesty can become tools for growth.

If you’ve ever felt emotionally stuck, reactive, disconnected, or weighed down by something you couldn’t quite explain, maybe it’s worth asking yourself:
“What is this wound trying to say?”

I also talk a bit about my book, The Working Man’s Guide to Mental Health, which was written to help make introductory cognitive behavioral therapy tools practical, approachable, and useful for everyday people, especially those who may never have thought therapy tools could apply to them. Additionally have a course coming up on May 21st you can email me at info@triskelmentalhealth or Dm me to register

Mental health isn’t weakness.
Self-awareness isn’t weakness.
Learning yourself is strength.
