This isn’t like one of my normal posts, but because July is Chronic Illness Awareness Month, I want to share my story.

At the beginning of May, I started taking minocycline for acne. I was told it was a safer alternative to Accutane, and I never imagined it would change my life.

Less than two weeks later, I developed the worst headache I’d ever had. After two days of unbearable pain, I went to the hospital. That’s when my entire world changed.

The medication caused me to develop Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH)—a rare but very real condition that caused dangerously high pressure around my brain. Within days, I had to undergo brain surgery and eye surgery to save my vision and relieve the pressure.

In just a matter of weeks, I lost 75% of the vision in my left eye and became completely paralyzed in my face. The pressure damaged the nerves that control my facial muscles. Imagine waking up one day and not being able to smile, laugh, or even make the facial expressions you’ve made your entire life. Imagine looking in the mirror and not recognizing the person staring back at you.

I’ll be honest I questioned God. I was angry. I cried more times than I can count. I kept asking, “Why me?” I couldn’t understand why this was happening or what I had done to deserve it.

But through everything, God never left my side.

Recovery has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced. Every tiny bit of movement I’ve gotten back has felt like a miracle. I’ve learned not to take the smallest things for granted being able to smile, blink, laugh, or simply see the people I love.

I’m incredibly thankful to still be here. To be able to walk. To be able to talk. To be able to keep fighting every single day.

I’m sharing this because IIH is something I had never even heard of before it happened to me. If my story can help even one person recognize the symptoms sooner or encourage someone who’s fighting an invisible illness, then sharing it is worth it.

Life can change in an instant. Don’t take your health for granted. Hug the people you love a little tighter. And if you’re going through something you never expected, don’t give up. Your story isn’t over yet. 🤍 by @chloe.bandree
