June 30th 2025 will forever be bittersweet. It was the end of my Uncle Bobby’s long journey with metastatic melanoma. Between celebrating the end of my Junior year, prom, my high academic achievement, and my upcoming senior year, almost every day at the end of June was filled with daily visits to East End Hospice. Every place I passed on Montauk highway was filled with memories of him. This time was the epitome of missing a moment while it was still happening. The afternoons and mornings were filled with watching the big bang theory, grabbing chips and soda from the extremely organized snack counter, but most of all the anticipation of the end. On June 30th, 2025, I had visited uncle Bobby in the morning. It was so familiar spending time with him and my parents, like nothing changed. After being there for a few hours we went home but my mother had an undeniable itch about going back. And so we went back, expecting to have a normal visit. We talked with Uncle Bobby and admired his strength, all whilst I went on the back patio to watch the deer and birds interacting in the garden. I sat there for a few minutes until I looked inside and there was a nurse with a stethoscope up to Uncle Bobby’s chest. Was it what I thought? Was this the moment? My chest tightened and I couldn’t face going back inside. I went in and started panicking, hyperventilating, and feeling an extreme rush of adrenaline. He was gone. The biggest supporter who was always proud of me even when I wasn’t proud of myself. I miss you so much. Vanilla shakes, the way you said “Wow!” and my “Asian Princess” nickname. There’s not a day that goes by that I think about you. Driving your car and having so many objects that you signed for me before you left remind me of you everyday. My uncle Bobby wasn’t just any uncle, he lived 2 minutes away from me, came to every one of my performances and celebrations, and never failed to love me. He made me proud by being proud of me. His love never failed. We held a “contract” that when I became a rich doctor I would make him a little house on my property and he would take care of my lawn and everything.
