« Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born. » -Anaïs Nin

🤍

Feeling grateful today for the incredible friends I have near and far, those I have yet to meet, the strangers and wanderers I have met along the way, all of whom have inspired me in such countless different ways in this wild ride I am blessed to call my life…

Now on the @wildreachproductions YouTube channel, Komarnica: The Wild That Remains tells the story of one of Europe’s last wild river canyons.
In the film, I talk about my explorations into the rich community of invertebrate animals that call this canyon home.

Komarnica is a deep, secluded canyon without any roads or other disturbance. In the bottom of the valley you still find a primeval forest of huge beech trees full of insects that specialise on old growth forest and that have disappeared from much of Europe. To me, the most special aspect of Komarnica is that it gives you an opportunity to experience a European ecosystem as it should be and as it existed all over the continent at one time. There are only few places left where such unspoilt biodiversity remains and Komarnica is one of them.

Filmed by @wildreachproductions and supported by @Save the Blue Heart of Europe and @EuroNatur in collaboration with @taxon_expeditions, @mes_cde, @spasimokomarnicu , the documentary follows scientists and local defenders working to document Komarnica’s extraordinary biodiversity before it is too late.

Watch the full film, sign the petition, and help protect Komarnica. Links in bio.
This July, I will return to Komarnica with taxon_expeditions and a new team of citizen scientists to continue exploring its hidden biodiversity. There are still a few spots open for the expedition. by @chloevfinch

Some places shape who we become. For me, one of those places is the Komarnica Canyon. As a child, I stood at its entrance, mesmerised by its raw beauty. Today I return as a scientist, working to protect it from destruction by a hydropower dam.

In the documentary Komarnica, the Wild That Remains by @wildreachproductions , filmed during the Secret Canyon Expedition with my organisation @taxon_expeditions , you can see me and my team exploring caves in the Komarnica Canyon, caves where no human had ever set foot before.

In the film, I share my personal connection to Komarnica and my concerns about the proposed hydropower development — this project would flood the canyon and push its unique species toward extinction.

I’m deeply grateful to the incredible team at WildReach Productions for capturing this story—enduring the brutal terrain and long days in the field—and also to @euronatur for their support in helping bring attention to the protection of Komarnica.

This July, I will return to Komarnica with @taxon_expeditions , @mes_cde , and a team of citizen scientists to continue exploring its hidden caves and documenting its extraordinary biodiversity.

And YOU can join us!

-Spots are open for the Secret Canyon Expedition (check out www.taxon expeditions.com to sign up)

Komarnica is still wild and free.
Let’s stand together and defend the wild places that still remain.

Just got back with a full heart from an incredible two weeks in Montenegro.
Alongside @romanwilliphotography we were filming our upcoming documentary at @wildreachproductions on the people fighting to protect the Komarnica canyon, home to one of the last free flowing rivers in Europe and a rich and biodiverse ecosystem.
Save Komarnica @spasimokomarnicu have been tirelessly fighting for the past 4 years to protect this beautiful wild place from the construction of a dam that would entirely destroy the wide array of species living within it. @taxon_expeditions and its wonderful citizen scientists have been working alongside @mes_cde documenting the species living in the canyon before it’s too late. Many have yet to be discovered.

I have truly fallen in love with this beautiful country and have left feeling invigorated and inspired by the passionate people I had the chance to meet this week and those I was lucky enough to senrendipously meet again after 3 years (small world!!) @cavernella @mennoschilthuizen @sotiris_kountouras
Seeing @pancratium_ and @andrijana_17 pour their hearts and soul into this fight to Save Komarnica has given me new hope for the next generation. There are still, in this world, people who care about our planet. I had started to believe in the common narrative that “it’s too late”.
What I see now is that no action is too small to make a difference. There is so much strength in community. With love and passion nothing is impossible.
This adventure has given me the confirmation that this is what I want to do keep on doing. Help make a small difference by sharing the stories of those who are fighting to beautify our planet.

Thank you to those who made this adventure possible ✨🌟

More pictures from my Calabrian summer. These are part of a series I call “put on hold”.
All of these photographs depict a funny Italian estival tendency to wake up at the crack of dawn, head down to the beach and set up one’s parasol and chair on the first rows of the beach - snatching the best spots closest to the water for a full day of sunbathing.
Being put on hold can also refer to one of those excruciatingly long moments spent on the phone with some form or another of administration; or also to being someone’s optional gateway if things don’t improve in whatever situation one is currently. Basically, being put and/or putting on hold is something I would not wish to my worst enemy.
However, within this Italian context, I can’t help but find it a little endearing, in this sneaky, passionate search for a bit extra vitamin D. by @chloevfinch

(Love you, Napoli)

Little fun fact about the clown: he was French and had been dancing barefoot in the streets of Naples for the past 10 years, performing as a clown mostly for himself it seemed. You know how some people have this energy that curiously draws you to them? I asked him if I could take his portrait, how could I not? Dressed all in pink, drinking his beer and dancing barefoot, he fit so seamlessly in the cobble streets of Naples. He repeatedly told me not to take life too seriously, as “it’s all a simulation”… I’ll keep it in mind, Jerome. taken in Naples, Italy by @chloevfinch

A year ago, we had no idea for far this story would travel. Now, When the Floods Come has travelled to over 25 countries across the world.

This film began in the frustration that amidst a climate crisis - caused largely by developed countries carbon - the livves of tens of millions of Pakistani people were underwater, and despite the scale of this disaster, we could not hear the peoples voices - how this had changed them on a human level.

The goal was to travel the length of the Indus, and to allow the camera to capture the emoptions of this cliamte crisis, then to carry their stories to people around the world. I wanted people to really look into their eyes, to listen to their voices, to sit and really feel something ... to feel empathy and urgenecy and that fundementally human urge to help our fellow man and woman.

So now, after everywhere this film has gone - from film festivals around the world, to screenings for world leavers at COP29, to intimate discussions in quiet community spaces - I feel deeply grateful that we, with all of your support, were able to achieve this dream.

To see people respond with tears, with love, with solidarity — not just for Pakistan, but for the fragile bond we all share as human beings.

To everyone who helped bring this to life, thank you.

And to all of you who’ve followed, supported, and shared this journey — I’m forever grateful.

The film is now streaming for free on YouTube. Link in bio!!

New work is on the way. Stories of climate, glaciers, and our shared life on this beautiful planet.

Much love to you all, and see you very soon! taken in Pakistan by @chloevfinch
