Chloé Hajjar, Still Burning, 2020.

There’s still time to see Women of the Arab Diaspora (Detroit) at the Detroit Historical Museum @detroithistorical ! Head there to see work like Still Burning in person, and explore migration, inheritance, and life between cultural geographies through the work of Arab women artists. A vertical composition dominated by reds, oranges, and blacks depicting a wildfire scene with an aerial firefighting plane dropping red retardant across a smoky sky at top right, while a firefighter in yellow gear stands amid burning brush and flames at center. In the lower portion, black silhouetted botanical motifs and Arabic calligraphy appear over a solid red field. On the upper left, a decorative panel contains three stylized red poppy or rose motifs on a black background with patterned borders, above a green-toned illustration of a poppy plant and the number "5."
