Who gets to tell our stories, and why does it matter? 🎙️

Last week, our Co-Founder Rachel Wang spoke on the “What to do About… “ Podcast, which centres discussions about Media Representation.

Alongside Peter Holbrook CBE, Lord Victor Adebowale CBE and David Floyd, the episode explores who shapes the stories we see in film, news and wider media, spotlighting why ensuring diverse voices are heard is essential for a more informed society ✨

Rachel Wang sits on the BAFTA Film Committee and in 2001 co-founded Chocolate Films @chocolatefilms , a social enterprise video agency whose profits support young people into video and film.

David Floyd co-founded Social Spider, which successfully runs five local newspapers across London at a time when others have been hollowed out, or simply disappeared.

Each has incredible insight into their own worlds.

But where it gets reaaaaally interesting is when they’re talking about the thing they have in common: representation

Filmmaking and local news. Both tell us about representation in Britain. Whose stories get told and who gets to tell them. Both failing to show us how the world really is.

But it doesn’t need to be that way.

In their own ways, to their own ends, Rachel and David are solving this problem.

In this week’s episode, they tell Peter and Victor how.

Last Thursday, as part of COP30, Somers Town Community Association @somerstowncauk hosted a wonderful day of community-led climate activities. The Melting Metropolis team led a storytelling workshop where local residents shared personal memories and reflected on their relationships with summertime. Later, our partners at STCA brought together a group of local climate leaders to move conversations around urban heat planning forward.
It was a day full of generous stories, new connections, and genuine collaboration. Our favourite piece of feedback summed it up perfectly: “More of this please!” The day was captured in this wonderful short film by @chocolatefilms by @chocolatefilms

For over 10 years Chocolate Films has had a close relationship with Clive Boursnell, since he photographed our directors filming in @marketfood back in 2015. However that seems to pale in comparison to the 50 years he has spent capturing the life and times of the market 🍏

To celebrate this dedication, on Wednesday 17th September New Covent Garden Market are holding an exhibition preview of Clive’s favourite, largely unseen work over the last 20 years 🖼️

Head to the The Atrium of The Food Exchange, New Covent Garden Market, from 6-8PM to witness the country’s largest wholesale market, through the eyes of Clive Boursnell 📸

The secret is out! Over the last year we worked with the National Archive to produce a series of exhibition films, exploring and uncovering the intricacies of working for MI5 📰

From interviewing key figures in the operation and documentation of MI5’s work, to bringing the history to live via archive animation, it was a privilege to be involved.

Check out two short snippets from the exhibition, from Official MI5 Historian Christopher Andrew, and our film exploring ‘The World Outside.’ 🌍

Make sure you head along to the National Archive by September 28th to get the inside scoop on life inside MI5 🔎
