RUYi - THE RENAISSANCE First we’d love to thank our amazing team for not just understanding the assignment but also bringing it to life! This collection is an exploration of Afrocentrism without limitation. We took familiar elements of African identity and allowed them to exist boldly, beautifully and unapologetically in contemporary fashion. The collection plays with the tension between heritage and reinvention: lace and linen brought together in unexpected combinations, familiar silhouettes reworked into something more expressive and exaggerated gele becoming sculptural statements rather than simply traditional headwear. Even the beauty language participates in the conversation. The amplified eye makeup, bold features and deliberate adornment reference the theatricality and richness of African expression, reminding us that our culture has always understood the power of being seen. The pieces are intentionally bold, strongly attached to where they come from carrying traces of home through texture, colour, embellishment, headwraps, embroidery and adornment, while giving other elements room to evolve. At the centre of it all is the Chimamanda Dress; a representation of strength, presence and the woman who carries more than herself. She embodies the idea that moving forward does not require leaving people, stories or culture behind. This is RUYi’s Renaissance. We look back at what we inherited and create a new language in the present from it.
