For H Street Eve this year we’re taking it back to the block where it all began.

The essence of H Street Eve is and has always been about the gathering of friends, family, and neighbors the night before the festival to connect, catch up, reminisce, and celebrate another year of life in our hood. We’ll have a curation of our H Street capsule collection available, including a new drop, for those looking to get a fit together for the festival.

Shouts out to @districtdaiquiri for hosting us. This gathering is powered by @4rlapp

Some BTS of me making my Art All Night T-Shirt Remix Challenge.

A childhood photo of me and my brother provided the nostalgic inspiration and the tools of my trade: pattern making, cut and sew, and screen printing, were utilized in bringing it to life.

Art is powerful when it’s used as a medium to convey a message. D.C. Statehood is mine.

I’ll be wearing this T-shirt, so If you see me out and about for Art All Night don’t hesitate to say hello and let’s take a photo together.

“I am a black man dedicated to expression; expression of the joy and pride of blackness. I consider myself neither poet, composer, or musician. These are merely tools used by sensitive men to carve out a piece of beauty or truth that they hope may lead to peace and salvation.”
- Gil Scott-Heron

These tools were on full display for all to embrace and enjoy @soul_versations Juneteenth Block Party. The event was hosted by Rita Lewis @ritadlewis202 and featured a lineup of musicians curated by Russell Taylor @rsoulstar. From Gospel, R&B, Hip-Hop, Rock, and, of course Go-Go and everything in between, this 2nd annual gathering of community commemorated the holiday through the powerful and joyful sounds rooted in our culture.

Celebrating both Juneteenth and Black Music Month, Soulversations accompanied this event with a month-long photo exhibition @manifest.us that shared the story and ongoing cultural advocacy of @dyanawilliams, since Black Music Month’s birth in the summer of 1979 with a star-studded celebration on the White House lawn. The Block Party is the continuation of this advocacy to forever engrave the historical and present day contributions of Black music and the joy it brings.

We found our joy, as one of the many Black-owned entrepreneurs, creatives, and makers participating in the block party market. We created a special capsule collection for the market that celebrated both Black liberation and Black music; thank you to everyone that shopped with us! The market itself exemplified the collective strength of Ujamaa (cooperative-economics), a principle that has been the foundation of thriving Black communities in America, whose roots trace back to African traditions of shared labor and mutual survival, manifesting formally in voluntary associations right around the American Revolution.

As you may have noticed on the 4th of July, no matter how much Black history and influence they attempt to erase, the cultural expressions born out of the Black experience has fundamentally shaped American identity. It’s this experience that is the litmus of America’s promise, the embodiment of its ideals and its joy are brilliantly, boundlessly, and boldly BLACK. taken in Washington D. C. by @chris_cardi

It’s nostalgic to measure life in summers. My father was just shy of seven decades worth. It’s been six summers since he went celestial. So much of what I have come to enjoy about life I owe to him, his appreciation of history, music, friendships, and living in the moment.

June encapsulates so much of my connection to him. Father’s Day and Juneteenth, the celebration of Black Music Month, and it also being the month—16 summers ago—that I made D.C. home to be closer to him. This makes the summer solstice for me, soul stirring to say the least.

Sharing music is how we kept our bond strong despite distance and time; a tradition me, my brother, and cousin continue. From riding round Philly with him and my uncle, while we all as kids in the back seats emulated them jamming out to The Gap Band, Kool & The Gang, Teddy Pendergrass, Freddie Jackson and so much more on our way to the Plateau. My pops stayed hip too! He was a big DMX fan; my brother and I would get a kick out of him rapping the adlibs at the top of his lungs, ha! And he was equally impressed when he discovered I was getting into Gil Scott-Heron.

My memories of him come as frequently as the morning, and my mourning is as frequent as the sunsets that follow. Maybe the grief will subside someday if I am blessed to become a father, a dad, a teacher, a protector, a provider, an elder.

The last slide is a photo I was able to share with my dad just before he passed. This was a win I never fully shared or took the time to celebrate as the loss I endured was far greater than anything I could ever imagine. Somehow, I believe that once my dad saw this and listened to me talk about it, he knew I would be just fine without him. He stopped fighting, he let go, confident that I had truly made D.C. my home like he did so many years ago.

As the sun has set on yet another Father’s Day, I know my dad is happy to see I am doing just fine without him. I just want him to know that life would be so much sweeter with him.
