She’s waiting for something.

Red sketch goes down first to use as a map for drawing.

She’s ready.

I was looking back over a bunch of old drawings and paintings. They remind me of a really rough time in life but I also see the seeds of where I am now with my work.

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Also this song makes me want to watch Real Genius.

1. Packaging. I thought a rigid mailer was just as good and way cheaper. Actually I switched to a kraft box system that costs almost double — about $4.70 a print instead of $2.40 — because I stopped treating the box as shipping and started treating it as a piece of the brand. Most people making things solo don’t think of themselves as a brand at all. But the box is the first thing someone touches before they even see the work. If that’s a plastic sleeve and a cheap mailer, you’ve already told them something — and it’s not what you meant to say.

2. The printer. I thought an Epson ET-8550 printing on archival cotton rag meant archival prints. Actually the printer runs dye ink — so I can’t legally call these archival until I put a pigment printer in the studio. About $1600 with a full set of ink. That’s the most expensive fix on this list.

3. Time per print. I thought sign, stamp, ship was a five-minute job. Actually once the trimmer’s dialed in, it’s a safe ten minutes a print — and at $55 a print, that’s real labor cost, not a rounding error.

4. The marketing budget. I thought I’d just spend whatever felt right when I felt like it. Actually I set a real rule: half of what’s left after costs goes to marketing, every month, whether I feel like it or not.

5. What I’d tell someone starting next week. I thought I needed the whole collection finished before I could sell anything. Actually the first finished piece is already a product — sellable now, prints and all. Waiting for everything to be done before you sell anything is holding you back.

That’s five. Please take the packaging one seriously.

The first one I posted had no audio. FAIL

I failed the client#. The illustration part wasn’t working, we both knew it, and we cut it loose.

I kept picking at it anyway.

That’s where Botanical Study No. 1 came from — not a client this time, no deadline, just seeing it through for myself. First piece in a larger Western world I’m building now.

Full story’s up on YouTube if you want it. Link in bio.

What does it cost me to make a print and how much do I make? Anything extra you think I should put in the package?

Is all my work digital? No and yes. At some point probably. Sixty percent of the time it’s digital at some point, every time.

Just finished this painting of a sleeping bunny for my daughter. I used the opportunity to experiment with process and get a little uncomfortable.

Ben Franklin said the turkey is a “bird of courage”, and he wasn’t wrong. They’re cleverer and more careful than anything else in the woods. This one’s for the bird, not the hunter. He came home with nothing. taken in Emmett, Idaho by @chrisbroyart
