More Italians with guitars.

Super duper fun to reconnect with Mark, JT and Wes and link up with Daniel Porter. This was my first go-around at the Dallas International Guitar Festival. Mark suggested we rock “Gigantactis.” This is a snippet from the end of the tune where Mark and I traded before rocking that monster riff to the outro. Whole video cometh after I go through the many cam angles in my inbox.

That’s my Vigier Surfreter into a board I made for the show. Backline Super Reverb. Dig the Chase Bliss Brothers AM for the dirt and Onward at the end. Keeley HALO for delay. With a Bog Street Battle Axe and some fresh 12s w/ a wound G, I was set.

More antics starting Monday, May 12th at The Asbury Hotel with my new jazz thing called Duo Calvo.

Italians with guitars.

Super fun to reconnect with Dweezil and his crew for another foray into Frank’s catalog. For our second go-around at the Newton Theater (first time was in 2014!) we rocked “Muffin Man” during the band’s encore. This is a snippet from the ending where Dweezil and trade and ultimately connect before heading out on the main riff.

That’s my Rick Toone ‘67 into a Fractal Audio FM3. With a Bog Street Battle Axe and some fresh NYXL 10s, I was set.

More antics starting Saturday, April 26th at The Rebecca Finn House with my new jazz thing called Duo Calvo. The weekend after I’ll be playing in various spots at the Dallas International Guitar Festival solo and as a guest of Larry Mitchell, Jimmy Wallace’s All-Stars and Mark Lettieri.

Hey #pittsburgh! Last night was a good one. Deeply grateful to John Shannon and everyone @conalmapgh for giving me this opportunity and treating us like family. Big thanks to Tony Grey and David Throckmorton for their stellar playing. Here’s a sample from the closer, “Massive.”

One of those Van Halen parts you recognize immediately.

Chris Buono breaks down the tapped harmonics from “Dance the Night Away,” with tabs on screen so you can grab your guitar and follow along.

And listen to the entrance: the chorus leaves the downbeat open before the guitar comes in on beat two.

Space first. Then the hook.

Rodney Holmes represents a few key firsts for me. Thanks to David Fiuczynski he was the first real drummer I met in NY. This was far back as the mid-90s. Also through Fuze he was the first real drummer I played with. From that first meet on a Don Byron production at Symphony Space we found ourselves in cahoots often. We collectively rocked with the best of the best in situations that were supremely awesome to completely hilarious. Regardless, it was super fulfilling every damn time.

Rodney could *play*. Trust me when I say I know that’s the understatement of the highest order, but if you got to experience it firsthand you knew it on a different level. Rodney was very much like a finely tuned sports car. He was top shelf at every turn, he never faltered and never looked like he was anything but in total control. One of one.

When someone you played music with passes to the next realm you quickly find yourself recounting the time spent with them. Playing is not just the playing, it’s the rehearsals where barely anything gets done because of all the distracting [re: perfect] one liners, the phone calls that start out as planning the next move before they shift somewhere else usually moronic (guilty as charged), the hangs before and after it all where you talk about life, the many times you break bread and, best of all - the laughs.

I laughed a lot with Rodney Holmes. Many times within the 00’s I played music with Holmes. Whether it was getting the call as sidemen or playing in each other’s bands or recording tracks for his solo record in his apartment in Bushwick, we logged a lot of hours together. To make it all happen they were phone calls, rehearsals, sound checks, meal breaks, dressing rooms, parking lots, stages, et al. It was in those moments we had those laughs.

Laughs notwithstanding we butt heads, too. We both had visions that had traces of Napoleon syndrome (short dudes unite!). Brilliant minds sometimes don’t think alike. Alas, that was then and this is now. At his core and more Rodney was good people - a solid citizen. He was also my friend and I will miss him along with all the laughs.

Rest easy, Holmes. by @chrisbuono

P90 power.

Dig the snap, crackle and pow(!) of this P90 from Jimmy Wallace Guitars out of Dallas, TX. That is what’s driving this Custom Shop SG Junior ‘63 Reissue into a UAD plugin modeling a Tweed Deluxe. If you’re really feelin’ the axe (how can you not?), drop me line. IT IS FOR SALE.

And, yes, that’s same Jimmy Wallace who puts on the very excellent Dallas Guitar Show AKA Dallas International Guitar Festival I rocked last year alongside guys like Greg Koch and Mark Lettieri. I won’t be out there this year due to dad duties that include a college graduation and move out from a galaxy far, far away. If you’ve never been or are on the fence about going again - GO. The lineup this year is nuts with guys like Sonny Landreth, Philip Sayce & Vernon Reid.

Chris Buono explains why dynamics are essential to making your guitar playing sound like real music. It’s not just about knowing the chords or playing the right notes. The inflections, the touch, and knowing when to play softer or dig in all bring the music to life.
