POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Late last year I got to work with @intelligentsiacoffee on a new art piece to go up in their hometown neighborhood of Wicker Park in Chicago. This piece ended up being about 8 stories tall!
Intelligentsia is very serious about their coffee and they wanted to showcase their craft and care in an illustration. From their direct partnerships with farms and evaluating agricultural lots to grow their beans, to bringing them back home to roast locally in Chicago and evaluate and assign flavor profiles, and serving it to the world.
Simplifying such a process was the challenge, there were sketches illustrating all those steps, but in the end I grounded it around their iconic coffee mug in a clever way to show how their imprint is there from the very beginning of the coffee journey to the last drop.
This project couldn't have happened without the homie @buffhondo for hooking it up, and @jongogel for the opportunity and letting me cook, and of course @laurrarn. taken in Wicker Park - Ashland and Division by @chrisdelorenzo

One of my favorite pieces is this lithograph I made with the print studio @milestonegraphics. I still have some prints available in my online shop. Pick one up and experience the velvety paper and subtle graphite tones for yourself. by @chrisdelorenzo

And here is the video we made for @hoka promoting all their sustainable environmental commitments. Beautiful animated by @aembury and @yellowlabtv. It was a daunting task to make 6 separate illustrations and then after find a way to tell a story connecting all of them in one movie. But thanks to the amazing talented creative team we assembled it was truly a pleasant experience. I’m really thankful to everyone who helped make this happen.

With the new Netflix adaptation of East Of Eden out now I was reminded of the poster design I created for the @steppenwolfthtr to celebrate their 40th anniversary commemorating some of their most famous productions. This poster meant a lot to me because the book is probably my all time favorite novel (I even have a tattoo that is a reference to it) and being able to have artwork associated with it was a daunting task. I tried to balance the beauty and cruelty in the story and the conflict, that primordial tug of war, between the light and the dark within us. I thought the new adaptation did a great job at capturing the spirit of the text and I’m glad to see it bringing a new audience to discover the Steinbeck novel.

This poster won numerous awards; a Clio, an Andy, a Communications Arts Award, and even a coveted D&AD pencil. This project came at the start of my freelance career and those accolades fueled me but definitely set the bar too high as the work in the intervening years from then to now did not bring me shiny new hardware. But 10 years on I’ve now grown into my art, I became free from any expectations, I continue to pursue goodness, greatness does not rule over me. In other words, timshel. by @chrisdelorenzo

Experimenting with some concrete relief prints. Still working on it. Trying to use my 3D printer to create the mold, and that’s a whole thing in itself to figure out the best way to break the mold in sections to be able remove it easily, I’m not gonna mess with silicone molds yet, I’m gonna mess with a more flexible filament first.
This is the third attempt, still far from perfect, but I’m getting closer. by @chrisdelorenzo

Got a nice box of goodies from the wonderful team at @papersource with the collection I created for them. They all turned out better than I could have imagined. That feeling of working on something in your studio for so long and then finally getting to see hold it in your hands and see it come to life never gets old for me.

Episode 55 w/ @chrisdelorenzo

In today’s episode, we sat down with an illustrator, former Johnny Cupcakes art director, and the kind of person who sees something interesting and immediately thinks, “That seems cool, I could learn how to do that.” Which explains the slacklining, archery, motorcycle license, and apparently preparing for the apocalypse.

We talk about setting up your studio space so experimenting is easier to start, why sometimes the problem isn’t your art but where you’re applying it, and developing a recognizable style without feeling trapped by it. Plus, how he and his college roommate designed the easy-on condom the world didn’t know it needed.

This is the endlessly curious and wildly talented Chris DeLorenzo!

Another year another record from @lylebrewermusic and another record that I got to create the artwork for. Learning Curve is his latest collection of originals. His albums are always sandboxes for him to play in and explore what he’s feeling and where he’s going musically and he gives me that same criteria to use these covers to explore my own creative pathways. I wanted to use more color and texture that is normally absent in my work and get my hands dirty a bit. Perfection doesn’t come overnight, it takes a long time and many crumpled pieces of paper and discarded songs to get to a place where you can execute your vision. I thought of stones, many hard and jagged stones beaten up over time to become a smooth round rock. Much like how you can kick an idea around in your head until you finally have it figured out, you can also kick a rock for a long time to make it round. All those miles kicking, that’s the learning curve.

In the last three images I added some of my scans and process images before color correction and composition, as well as an early first draft of the idea at the end.
