It was the last official night of summer, but the Monadnock community turned out to see MacDowell Fellow @chrisiduma present work from his ongoing project “Lagos: The History of Quietude” in our MacDowell Downtown series.

The focus of the artist and photojournalist’s MacDowell residency, the project combines documentary sensibilities with experimental and conceptual approaches, reimagining his home city in multi-layered, evocative images that reveal a sense of isolation and quiet stillness. Having arrived at MacDowell with thousands of photographs taken over five years, Christopher is currently at work identifying and contextualizing about 150 photos for inclusion in the finished work.

MacDowell Downtown takes place March through November, coinciding with downtown Peterborough’s First Fridays. We hope to see everyone again in October and November for the final two 2023 events in the series.

The Heritage Oil × LagosPhoto Portfolio Review 2025 invites photographers across all genres to present their most compelling bodies of work for critical engagement and recognition. This open call seeks visionary creators who blend conceptual rigor, technical mastery, and narrative depth to submit portfolios that challenge perception and expand the boundaries of visual storytelling.

Two photographers whose submissions best exemplify innovation, clarity of vision, and emotional intelligence in their craft will each receive ₦1,000,000 as recognition of artistic excellence and contribution to contemporary African photography.

Applicants must be 18 years or older and should submit a cohesive body of 12-24 photographs, alongside a biography, CV, artist statement, and project synopsis. All materials should be compiled in PDF format and emailed to curator@africanartists.org with the subject line Application: Portfolio Review before November 6, 2025.

“LAGOS: The History of Quietude” by Nigerian photographer and visual artist Chris Iduma (@chrisiduma) is the latest feature in our Virtual Gallery series.

In a city known for its energy and hustle, Iduma turns his lens toward something less expected: stillness. His images capture the quiet moments in Lagos—pauses between movement, glimpses of reflection, and the subtle choreography of everyday life. But beneath the surface, Iduma’s images perform a deeper intervention. He challenges the colonial and global media gaze that has long framed Lagos (and African cities at large) through spectacle: either as sites of dysfunction or hyper-productivity.

Instead, Iduma chooses pause. His photographs carve out moments of rest, reflection, and intimacy—offering a new archive of the city that resists being flattened into clichés of “hustle” or hardship.

This is Lagos seen from within, on its own terms.

Chez Christopher Iduma, la photographie devient un acte de résistance. Il brouille les perspectives, superpose les figures, et compose des images qui résonnent comme des fragments de mémoire collective. En fusionnant deux corps dans un même cadre, il compose des portraits hybrides où s’entrelacent les contradictions du soi et les négociations silencieuses du sensible — une manière d’incarner ce va-et-vient constant, ce jeu de reflets entre le soi et l’autre, entre mémoire collective et expérience individuelle.

For Christopher Iduma, photography becomes an act of resistance. He blurs perspectives, superimposes figures, and composes images that resonate like fragments of collective memory. By merging two bodies in the same frame, he composes hybrid portraits where the contradictions of the self and the silent negotiations of the sensible intertwine—a way of embodying this constant back-and-forth, this play of reflections between the self and the other, between collective memory and individual experience.

I will be sharing two works from my long-term project 'Self-Portraits’. In creating a unique visual language and platform that challenges one’s perception, perspectives and assumptions. One project that leads that effort is ‘Self- Portraits. In this project, I experiment by layering multiple figures together as a means to consider complex issues around identity. In each image I meld two bodies/subjects to reflect on the complexity of their identity. Through this technique, I play with the viewers perception. I bring together two different human subjects – sometimes strangers who have never met before and in one instance a set of twin- and creates one complex human portrait.

Through this layering, I reveal contradictions that are inherent in the lives of my subjects, and comment on how they negotiate their sense of self.

I will be sharing a selection of new works, alongside a few older pieces, from my long-term project 'Lagos: The History of Quietude,' which reimagines Lagos beyond its common portrayal as a "steamy, high-octane, commercial capital," to offer a counter-narrative that highlights the city's stillness and quietude. Through this imagined lens, I seek to uncover an alternative story of Lagos—one that invites viewers to reflect on the city as an urban phenomenon from an introspective perspective. The project also serves as an exploration of my own territorial ambitions, blending personal and collective memories to construct a candid and nuanced history. It emphasizes 'Lagos as a narrative than as a place'.
