Another unfathomable evening thanks to the Parnassus Literary Society, as they awarded me their Medal of Freedom tonight during their symposium focused on The Future of The World: Being a Utopia or Dystopia?

This is the oldest literary society in Greece dating back to 1865.

I’m waiting for the reveal that it’s all a big mistake… 😵‍💫

Seriously. Thank you 🙏🙏 taken in Παρνασσός (Parnassos) by @chrisjaymes

We are gifted these moments in life where someone creates a “thing” (in this case @paulremembers ) through self discipline, self torment, and determination….

Which is then given a chance to be actualized through the sheer force of (cash, no… I mean) human will power (in this case @moshelikeyoshi & the support of @hbstudionyc )…

And then… the miraculous and somewhat happenstance synchronicity of chemistry (in this case Chris @ldannaslee for the production design & Moshe @moshelikeyoshi - Juan @polocholito & myself as actors)…

And somehow, to sound absolutely & proudly pretentious — we are ingested, digested, and reconfigured in a manner unlike anything we could’ve done on our own.

And being a part of that is why I love what we do.

I skimmed the review this quote came from without thoughtfully honoring the writer who took the time to be far more thoughtful with words than I will ever have the capacity to be.

And then yesterday, my insanely amazing/ non-theater going mother says to me — that’s an incredible compliment, what that reviewer wrote. And I shrugged it off and said yeah. Definitely. Very nice. And she says — you know what it means? And I said, sure. Yeah. I guess they were complimenting my performance in comparison to a magician? I guess. And she quickly berated me and joyfully exposed my immense ignorance.

She said “look it up” — but before she could handle waiting for me to do so, she texted …

“A pocket Merlin is a playful nickname from the book To Kill a Mockingbird that means a small child with a huge imagination, magical creativity, and a mind full of wild, clever ideas.“

And she was extremely proud to expose the depth of my profound stupidity while leading me to comprehend one of the most thoughtful comments someone has taken the time to write.

So thank you Michael Tyrell for your extraordinary thoughtfulness and your complementary words. And thanks mom, for properly reminding me who I am. 🤪😵‍💫

And to all the rest of you who made the experience so wonderful. by @chrisjaymes

One last look back at PORTRAITS OF GAYS IN DESPAIR.

Following our June run at HB Playwrights Theatre, we were grateful to receive two reviews from Stage and Cinema celebrating Paul Kubicki’s writing, our company of actors, and the artists who built this strange, funny, tender world with us.

And we were just as grateful for what audiences had to say:

“Loved the staging—in the round, a first for me at HB—and just the sheer commitment of the actors to bringing the script to life.”
— Emily Adler

“Such original work well staged with talented actors. Definitely a fresh voice tackling interesting issues like gay friendships, aging, and ethics of technology presented through a biting sense of humor.”
— Jason Kello

“Really clever writing, nice production using the space, all actors did a wonderful job.”
— Matt de Ganon

“The inventiveness of the material and staging. To me, it completely exemplified the ethos of HB!!!!”
— Eve Bianco

“The series of short plays was engaging and creative. The characters were vulnerable and at times absurd. The comedy was clever!!!”
— Audience Member

“It was really good. Darkly funny, well performed and perfect for a gay that overthinks everything (me).”
— Will Morrison

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the round and shared this strange little collection of portraits with us.
