Men’s Mental + Physical Health

While most men are familiar with the importance of physical health and exercise, not all are aware of the important link between physical and mental health.

The connection between physical and mental health works both ways. Physical illness not only leads to certain mood disorders–the opposite can also occur. While a depressed mood is thought to contribute to the development and progression of some medical illnesses, physical illness can trigger or increase the risk of depression (PMID: 16889110).

Fortunately, exercise is a great way to improve both your physical and mental health. In fact, a recent study in 2020 (PMID: 31539676) determined that an inactive adult who starts exercising 3x/week may decrease his/her risk of depression by 19%. In the study, those who exercised reported fewer symptoms of depression than sedentary participants. The more the study participants exercised, the more their depression symptoms decreased.

Disclaimer: While exercise is an excellent way to improve physical and mental health, it is not a substitution for professional mental health care. If you are concerned about your mental health and the effects it may be having on your body, it is important to seek help from your doctor and therapist. Being truly healthy requires a healthy body and mind.

October has been a pretty great month

Some great weather, new business and opportunities, taking a few leaps of faith, some of our best friends getting married, and plenty of little moments in between.

A lot of things are starting to come together, some things are still up in the air, and some things are just exciting to figure out along the way.

Feeling pretty grateful for where things are headed and the people I get to share it all with.

All jokes… but fr, actually lock in this time. Hope you didn’t lose the key. by @chrisjchan_

It’s a pretty amazing thing to have someone in your corner who supports all the things you’re passionate about, even the ones that might not make much sense to anyone else.

The early mornings, the training, the races, the money spent on another pair of shoes, and the constant pursuit of getting a little better at something that, realistically, most people don’t care that much about.

Stop entertaining people who can’t commit to you while making excuses for why you can’t commit to yourself.

Your health deserves the same energy you keep giving people who don’t deserve it.

Let’s see you thrive. by @chrisjchan_
