@chrisle711 going up a step on the podium in the second stage 💪🏼

The photographer needs to concentrate on some race shots though 😂

Stage 2 – XXIX Volta de la Safor 🇪🇸

Today’s stage started with a very long neutralised section, but once the flag dropped it was full gas from the start. I stayed comfortable around the top 20 in the peloton before we hit the main climb of the day – the 4 km ascent to Barx.

The climb immediately split the race and I was briefly off the back, but I settled into my own rhythm and focused on reeling riders back in. Over the 4 km I managed to bridge across to a small group and we worked well together over the top before committing to a fast descent.

Ahead of us the breakaway was still about 500 m up the road, but with some good cooperation we eventually brought them back just before the town of Beniarredrá where the finish was waiting.

Two teammates guided me through the bunch in the final meters and I launched the sprint, just missing out on the win in the Masters 60 category.

Our international racing snake @chrisle711 getting on the podium again for the second weekend running. Well done Chris the top spot is coming 💪🏼💪🏼

Stage 1 – Alfahuir ➡️ Castellonet de la Conquesta
🥉 3rd Master 60

Proper bike race from the gun.

Straight out of Alfahuir and into a savage 16% climb up to Castellonet de la Conquesta — rough roads, orange groves, legs screaming early doors. Got distanced on the first hit and watched the bunch roll away… never a nice feeling.

Kept calm, worked with a small group, and 10km later we clawed our way back to the main bunch — all the Master 60 hitters were there. Including last year’s & this year’s Comunidad Valenciana champs and Ashley Holding (4th at Worlds Gravel).

Finale was back up the climb. Sat top 10, stuck to my rhythm when the surges started, waited for the second half of the ascent… then big ring, head down, commit.

Crossed the line for 🥉 in Master 60.

Game on for the next two stages.
Now it’s simple: eat, sleep, repeat.

Massive well done to @chrisle711 who has overcome surgeries to get back to where he knows best on the podium.

This was the second time I’ve raced since I broke my collarbone nearly 18 months ago. The race consisted of junior’s, sub 23s, master 30 master 40 master 50 and Master 60’s. The pace was high once the neutralised zone had been completed, on a fairly flat course. We averaged just over 45 km an hour for the 80 km race. It was nervous all the way, elbows and handlebars touching on many occasions, nobody was giving an inch... Good bike handling skills were essential. I stayed in the top 20 riders as best I could keeping an eye on other master 60 competitors. The final sprint was chaotic and if I had been able to find a way through I probably could have done better than I did. But I guess that is the art. The Dutch national champion just got me on the line and another Master 60 did a very dangerous move and pipped the national champion on the line very nearly causing a pile-up... Crazy!! Very happy with the result considering the two operations on my collar bone plus the recovery and physio over the last months. Looking forward to more racing and then coming over to do the Abberleys in May.
